The PC-9801 was a 16-bit personal computer announced by NEC in October 1982, and was the first generation machine in the PC-9800 Series.
Against this background, the PC-9801 was a desktop 16-bit personal computer which achieved higher processing speed while inheriting both the hardware and software assets of the NEC 8-bit personal computers (typified by the PC-8001 and PC-8801).
In October 1986 NEC marketed the PC-98LT -- a version of the PC-9800 with trimmed down features -- as Japan's first laptop personal computer.

NEC was the dominant force in the market for over a decade with its PC 9801 and subsequent models, thanks to its influence in the Japanese electrical goods market and its powerful retail network.
Up until then, the all-powerful influence of NEC's PC 9801 stemmed from the fact that it was the only one to offer an input system for Japanese ideograms ('Kanjis') that was any good.
Subsequently, NEC has had to go along with the pace-setting Win95, abandoning its various proprietary and largely incompatible systems in response to the erosion of its market share.

The original Windows PC remakes were "Ys Eternal" and "Ys II Eternal." Later, there was a compiled rerelease, which bumped up Ys Eternal's visuals to Ys II Eternal's level (more color depth, primarily) and made the soundtrack sound more cohesive between the two.
Ys, especially Ys Book I and II in its various incarnations and remakes, is known throughout the industry for its groundbreaking melodic soundtrack by Yuzo Koshiro, Mieko Ishikawa and Hideya Nagata, who were among the first video game musicians to move beyond blips and bleeps to create movie-like memorable soundtracks in video games.

NEC HAS VERSION OF PC-NOTE WITH LIMITED CELLULAR LINK - CBRonline.com
It's some way from the freely usable cellular pocket computer, but NEC Corp in Japan has replaced the hard disk in its PC-Note 9801 handheld version of its market-dominating PC-9801 personal computer and replaced it with a modem and transceiver that enables it to send and receive data by radio.
NEC says that it sees great potential in the service, however it is being very cautious and planning to make only 5,000 machines in the first year.
The RC-9801 is just over $4,000, more than double the price for a PC-9801 Note, but the City Media service itself appears to be priced to compete with pocket bells as pagers are called in Japan, the basic fee being $17.50 with packets of data at less than a cent a time.
