Topic: NEC TurboGrafix 16

  Dark Watcher's Console History
NEC dubbed the US release Turbografx-16, and prepared to dominate both Nintendo and Sega as they did in Japan.
NEC was also the first to market CD based games using an add on device called the Turbografx CD.
Also NEC was introducing games, titles, and characters that American players simply weren’t familiar with, and many truly excellent games were either ignored outright, or subject to Nintendo's "exclusive licensing" policy that was in effect at the time.

Unless you read 2 or 3 gaming magazines every month you probably don't know what a 3DO or Turbografix 16 is. The only company that tried to advertise on TV was Panasonic for the 3DO and at most there were only 2 or 3 spots that made it to the tv set.
The Turbografix itself was only slightly more powerful then the NES but somehow pushed graphics on par with the powerful Genesis.
NEC even managed to put out one of the first CD add-ons for a console.

 ClassicGaming.com - The Museum: TurboGrafx-16
In Japan, shortly after the introduction of Nintendo's Famicom (Japan's version of the NES), the electronics giant NEC entered into the videogame market with the introduction of their "next generation" system, known as the PC Engine (PCE).
In 1989, two years after its Japanese introduction, NEC announced plans to bring the PC Engine overseas, to the booming videogame market of the U.S. With a huge library of Japanese software, it seemed to many as though the system couldn't possibly fail.
Shortly after NEC stated its intention to bring the PC Engine to the U.S., Sega announced that its Mega Drive system (released in Japan a year after the PC Engine) would also be coming to the U.S. as the Sega Genesis.

At one point, NEC Interchannel proposed bringing DigiCube's Ys I and II: Eternal Story to the US, but the idea was rejected by Sony, due to their prevailing attitudes toward the viability of 2D games in the US market, as well as numerous technical issues with the port itself.
Ys, especially Ys Book I and II in its various incarnations and remakes, are known throughout the industry for its groundbreaking melodic soundtrack by Yuzo Koshiro, Mieko Ishikawa and Hideya Nagata, who were among the first video game musicians to move beyond blips and bleeps to create movie-like memorable soundtracks in video games.

Although NEC's TurboGrafix-16 had beat the Genesis to market by nearly four months, Sega quickly regained lost ground, thanks to their line-up of quality arcade conversions, killer sports games, and most of all, the full support of Trip Hawkins and Electronic Arts.
Although the Genesis development kit was reportedly overly expensive and initially difficult to work with, by the end of 1990 there were over 30 third-party developers writing games for the new system, compared to four for the TG16.
Early on, NEC announced that sales and distribution of the TG16 would be handled by a new company known as Turbo Technologies Inc. (TTI), made up of senior staff members of both NEC and Hudson Soft.

It did not release the SNES in Japan until November 1990, known there as the Super Famicom, in the US in September 1991 and in the UK in April 1992, simply because the NES was doing well and new games were still being released for it.
When it finally hit the market though, it proved to be a powerful and impressive competitor to Sega's Mega Drive and NEC's Turbografix-16.
The SNES had a much slower processor then the Mega Drive, but it really excelled when it came to its graphics processor.

If you see the game display (in full or in part) shrinked to the left side of the screen, this is caused by using -depth 16 on a game that doesn't support 16-bit display.
With -depth 16, shadows are also color accurate, otherwise the old gray scale shadows are used.

All the 16 bit systems had their share of good games, great games, mediocre games, "event" games, crap games with brand name licenses, and just plain ol' crap on a stick.
Here's the deal, Genesis had some cool games but its sound sucked, sound to noise ratio was 16 to 1; it could choose from something like 1200 colors but could only display something like 100 at the same time.

Console specifications are a lot like statistics in that you can really change perceptions by paying special attention in selecting what you measure and how you go about measuring it.
