Molecular Expressions: Chip Shots - NEC
NEC has manufactured telecommunications equipment for more than a century and is one of the oldest companies in the computer industry, having begun research into transistors in 1950 and into integrated circuits in 1960.

 What is NEC V20? V30 8086 8088 80186 Emulate Commands Tandy
The NEC V20 was Nippon Electric Company's (NEC) first venture into reverse-engineering an Intel microprocessor chip instead of licensing the designs, as was common practice in the 1980s.
The NEC V20 was directly interchangeable with Intel's 8088 microprocessor line, and featured a die having 29,000 transistors and a clock speed of 8 to 10 MHz.
Although the NEC chips use the same set of commands as their Intel counterparts, they are not identical.

NEC V20 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The NEC V20 (μPD70108) was a processor made by NEC that featured approximately 29,000 transistors.
An unusual feature of the NEC V20 was that it added an Intel 8080 emulation mode, in which it could execute programs written for the Intel 8080 processors.
The NEC V30 (μPD70116) was a version of the NEC V20 that was pin compatible with the 16-bit data bus Intel 8086 processor.

 cpu-collection.de >> NEC >> V20
The NEC V20 is a 16-bit CMOS microprocessor with 8-bit external data bus, object-code and pin-compatible with the Intel 8088.
Native NEC V20 instruction set includes all 8086/8088 instructions, new instructions from the 80186/80188 microprocessor, and instructions unique to V20 - bit processing, packed BCD instructions and special instructions for switching the processor to 8080 emulation mode and back.
The V20 is almost the same as the NEC V30 with the exception that the V30 has a 16-bit data bus.

NEC seeks to have such a ruling applied to several of the microsequences in the Intel microcode that are very short, involve only a few steps, and are handl ed almost identically in NEC's accused microcode and by Mr.
Intel's rationale is that NEC normally would desire that the microcodes for the V20 and the V30 be able to operate in both microprocessors, and t hat it would have been preferable to create the hardware of the V20 without the bug and thus avoid the mistake found in the 8088.
However, NEC had a license from Intel to duplicate the 8086/88 microprocessor hardware to the extent comprehended by the Intel patents.

The NEC group's turnover is almost 43 billions USD and this is generated by almost 155.000 employees who are working at approximately 250 companies all over the world (1996).
NEC Corporation's domestic history began in 1963 when the first U.S. office was opened in New York City.

NOW, THE JAPANESE CHALLENGE IN MICROPROCESSORS Japan's largest chipmaker is moving fast to break the U.S. hammerlock on ...
NEC, whose $1.8 billion in chip sales in 1984 made it Japan's biggest in the field, plans to seize a macro chunk of the market with micros of its own design and thus escape the costs, delays, and humiliations of having to license U.S. chips.
NEC, Hitachi, and Fujitsu could follow suit by developing micros of their own design that are good enough to compete in the open market.
NEC is going for broke: it has lined up Zilog in the U.S. and Sony in Japan as backup suppliers, introduced 11 peripheral chips to go with the V series, teamed up with Hewlett-Packard's Japanese subsidiary to make a development system, and signed deals with a gaggle of U.S. software houses.

NEC V20/V30 Bug Howard Vigorita New York Amateur Computer Club I recently saw a message from Jonathan Platt on a Florida bulletin board which mentioned rumors of a bug in the NEC V20/V30 processor.
This is not a serious bug; the Intel register PUSH & POP instructions are duplicated in two sets of instructions and all the assemblers and compilers I've seen default to the shorter single byte set in favor of the two byte set.
It is much simpler than the technique of issuing a unique NEC instruction and intercepting the error trap interrupt.

 SorgoNet.com 8086
There is an interesting thing to know on this processors is that there are 2 NEC processors that could substitute it to gain performance.
Specifically the 8086 could be substituted for NEC-V30, and 8088 for NEC-V20, in both cases there are absolutely compatibles as in hardware as in software, they are processors who have been optimised, and in certain commands overcomes till 3 times the performance on its execution, also incorporates the additional 286 instructions in real mode.
Then if you'd have a super-XT at home, the best for speed power is to substitute the processor by an NEC and to incorporate a 8087 mathematic coprocessor.

This should be used as another way (in addition to the one presented in the first article on this subject) to distinguish the NEC V20/V30 series from the Intel 8086/88.
Since V20 and V30 execute all the 80186 instructions and knowing that PUSHA executed on the 8086/88 as "JMP $+2", one can for example, after executing it, set the carry flag and then see if it was really set.
If we execute a string operation with a repeat prefix and also a segment override for long enough to be interrupted, then, if we are on a 8086/88 the REP prefix will be lost when the instruction is interrupted, since on return, only the last prefix will be retained.

Olympus MIC-D: Integrated Circuit Gallery - Intel 8088 Microprocessor
During its fledgling years, Intel had to have other, more established semiconductor manufacturers produce its chips like the 8088 since computer manufacturers such as IBM did not want to bet their entire personal computer line on an unproven entity.
They later tired of simply licensing rights and designs from Intel and reverse-engineered the processor to create the NEC V20.
The V20 was more efficient than the 8088 (increased clock speed), while maintaining complete compatibility and using the same command set as the 8088 processor.

NEC was another of the licensed second-source producers of the 8086 and 8088, but was not content to simply reproduce: NEC wanted to improve the breed.
The V20 is of interest because it was a faster 8088 (and the V30 the 8086) — the first clone CPU, if you like — and Intel's lawyers were not impressed about it.
Eventually, NEC was given the go-ahead by the courts, but by then the 286 was the thing to have and it was too late for either NEC or the computer buying public to benefit much.

Only the NEC V20 & V30, pin compatible with 8088 & 8086 respectively, are usually found in IBM compatible PCs.
The V20 and V30 are often supplied as an "upgrade kit" for PCs originally equipped with an 88/86, as they execute most instructions in fewer clocks and can be used at a higher clock rate than the Intel parts.
The NEC V20 and V30, as well as the 286+ CPUs use that encoding to indicate new instructions.

The NEC V20 processor is not completely equal to the 8088 processor, and the author of Uruguay was apparently not completely aware of this, so it happened that his first two creations only worked on a NEC V20 processor.
