	A Legal Perspective on Y2K in Thailand
		On April 28, 1998 the Cabinet passed a resolution that every governmental ministry must establish a Y2K committee to assess, provide assistance and establish estimated budgets to be allocated in solving the problem.
		The Cabinet further resolved that NECTEC be appointed as the Coordinating Center to assist in carrying out these tasks.
		NECTEC has tracked the progress of the Y2K renovation in each government ministry and agency, and has facilitated the inspection of computer equipment and non-IT devices, such as embedded systems.

	IMTS - News - International Manufacturing Technology Show
		Nectec deputy director Pansak Siriruchatapong said automotive electronics was a potential business area for local auto-parts manufacturers as well as embedded system and software developers to create products and services for the automotive industry.
		Nectec will work with government organisations including the Thailand Automotive Institute, the Electrical and Electronics Institute, and the Industrial Promotion Department, as well as academic research institutions and the private sector in the automotive and electronics field to set the direction for the development of the automotive-electronics industry.

		Nectec director Dr Thaweesak Koanantakool noted that already this year, Nectec had co-developed open source software for servers running in SMEs and also worked with the Education Ministry to develop software for more than 600 schools in co-operation with SIS Distribution and Metro Professional Products.
		Nectec has developed freeware that works with Windows so that everybody can use basic programs legally and free of charge.
		SIS Distribution (Thailand) general manager Palakorn Chirasopone said that SIS had joined with Nectec to offer a solution with an IBM server for SMEs for around 60,000 baht, which includes the hardware and monthly Internet access fee.

	News: Egat opens its e-learning system to all
		Nectec director Dr Thaweesak Koanantakool said they would use the software to develop e-learning courses using Nectec content and make these available for public use in the future at its e-learning web site at www.elearning.nectec.or.th.
		It is also high quality and the software is free of charge,'' he said, noting that those who developed e-learning modules or have the content to develop e-learning lessons should consider the software because it also supports e-lesson sharing.
		Nectec also plans to add more features to the software including text-to-voice technology, intelligent search, and machine translation to translate English language into Thai automatically.

		Actually, the courses weren't taught by NECTEC but by the staff of Kaiwal Software, a company best known for its Thai distribution of Linux, "KW Linux".
