  mmmonkey Disabling NES Lockout Chip
Once the lockout chip has been disabled, you will be able to play virtually any NES game from anywhere in the world on your NES, you will still need an adaptor for Famicom games though because of the physical differences.
Disabling the lockout chip in a NES is quite easy, simply take apart your console completely, remove the top, then the metal shielding, remove the motherboard from the case as you'll be working on the underside of it.
Another side affect of disabling the lockout chip is that the power light on your console will no longer blink if you switch on your console without having a game inserted.

The standard NES controller is small and rectangular with very few buttons on it.
A few other peripherals were made, such as the NES Satellite, which let the NES controllers work from a distance without a long cord, like a remote control (batteries not included), and the little-known NES Power Glove, which gave the player virtual reality capabilities in certain games, but proved to be mostly a flop.
The NES witnessed the creation of many great games; and they did have their bad ones two, like every other system.

Also in contrast to the Famicom, the controllers included with the NES were identical to each other - the second controller lacked the microphone that was present on the Famicom model, and possessed the same "Start" and "Select" buttons as the primary controller.
On the NES, these special controllers were generally connected to one of the two control ports on the front of the unit.
Atari created a line of NES products under the name Tengen, and took a different tack: the company obtained a description of the lockout chip from the United States Patent and Trademark Office by falsely claiming that it was required to defend against present infringement claims in a legal case.

Keep in mind that the lockout chip was removed from the NES 2, so if you are an owner of that version of the NES, this article doesn't really apply to you.
The lockout chip is also a factor in why your NES won't start up, turning itself off and on when you try to play a game.
Disabling the lockout can ease quite a bit of frustration (no longer having to blow into the cartridge!) but it is still recommended you regularly clean your cartridges and cart contacts inside the system.

 The Infamous Lockout Chip
When the NES was released in the US, Nintendo did not want a repeat of the Famicom or Atari 2600.
I don't know if they came up with the idea first, but the essential idea is you can "stun" the lockout chip in the console with a negative voltage spike, and it will crash it, and result in it being effectively disabled.
Camerica then came up with a similar lockout defeater that is based on a small 2 transistor voltage inverter which was quite elegant.

Naturally, as is obvious to anyone who's dabbled in NES emulation or development, the small size became a barrier for game developers, who developed 'mappers', which allowed blocks of memory to be swapped in and out of the CPU's address space (and the PPU's, too) through writes to 'magic' memory locations.
In addition to the controller plugs, the NES sported RF and composite outputs for connection to a TV, and an expansion port on the underside which was never used.
The NES, the system that brought back the North American console industry, is now, in the minds of the general public, just a memory and a relic next to the shiny new 3D game systems and their less-shiny immediate predecessors.

The Famicom contained no lockout hardware, and, as a result, unlicensed cartridges (both legitimate and bootleg) were extremely common throughout Japan and the Far East.
Such devices included, but were not limited to, the NES Zapper (a light gun), the Power Glove, the Power Pad, and the ill-fated R.O.B. The original Famicom featured a DB-15 expansion port on the front of the unit, which was used to connect most auxiliary devices.
Attaching the Game Genie device to a NES cartridge meant that the front-loading mechanism would be bent while playing, and the Game Genie's retention mechanism (a triangular piece of plastic) made the device difficult to remove as well.

While the NES was accused of shoddy construction and poor planning, the SNES was rumored to be a tool of outright economic war.

Many of these devices were modelled after earlier add-ons for the NES: the Super Scope was a light gun similar to the NES Zapper (though the Super Scope featured wireless capabilities) and the Super Advantage was an arcade-style joystick with adjustable turbo settings akin to the NES Advantage.
