The Zapper, or Light Gun as it is called by many people, has been around almost as long as the NES itself.
Although it's difficult to imagine the NES without the Zapper, there were relatively few games that it could be used for.
Furthermore, many younger gamers felt jaded by the Zapper (gray or orange) since it was playable with so few games and cut off the cords so they could play with the Zapper itself as if it were a real gun, thereby further lowering the amount of active Zappers in the wild.

Maybe there are already joystick drivers that recognize the Zapper when wired to the parallel port.
He is using the gyro mouse to move around and the fire button on the zapper is wired to the right click.

This would provide all the functionality that I would need in a NES Mouse Gun and it would be extremely easy albeit terribly ugly.
Once the mouse was completely dissected, I soldered the two wires coming from the NES Zapper trigger to the two connections for the left-click button [shown above].
This allowed the remote circuitry to fit in the NES controller and allowed me to bend the diode to the cable/cord hole of the original NES case.

The Nintendo Zapper is a light gun that was included with early NES game consoles, to play a number of games including Duck Hunt I have one of the early gray coloured Zappers.
I then hooked the Zapper up to the joystick port of the XGS and wrote a simple program with the Tile Engine to display the state of the two ports.
If you want to read the Zapper quickly during video processing then it is much better to hook it directly to an i/o port where it can be read in one clock cycle with no overhead.

The most common of these peripherals is the NES Zapper (light gun), which is used to shoot down things (like clay pigeons) in certain Zapper-using games, such as Duck Hunt.
A few other peripherals were made, such as the NES Satellite, which let the NES controllers work from a distance without a long cord, like a remote control (batteries not included), and the little-known NES Power Glove, which gave the player virtual reality capabilities in certain games, but proved to be mostly a flop.
The NES witnessed the creation of many great games; and they did have their bad ones two, like every other system.

Nintendo released many other controllers, including the NES Max which was shaped like a small Genesis controller and used a round sliding disc for control.
Another popular controller was the NES Advantage, which was a large arcade-style joystick with lots of special abilities such as slow motion and autofire.

The way the Zapper works is when you pull the trigger the targets that you are supposed to be aiming for will change, depending on the game you're playing for example in Duck Hunt the duck or the clay pigeon will change to a white square roughly the same size as the target.
If the sensor in the end of the gun detects this shape, then it will register a hit, on the other hand if it does not detect the white square it will register as a miss.

When the trigger was pulled, the game blanked out the screen with a fl background for one frame, then, for one additional frame, drew a solid white rectangle around the sprite the user was supposed to be shooting at.
The photodiode at the back of the Zapper would detect these changes in intensity and send a signal to the NES to indicate whether it was over a lit pixel or not.

NES Zapper - Now What? - AtariAge Forums
So, awhile ago, my Zapper stopped working, I figured it was likely the gun itself - well I've now tried 2 more and it still doesn't work, which I assume means something is up with my system itself.
So it's not really an accuracy issue, it seems to be in input issue with the actual trigger, but since it's happened w/ 3 guns, it seems like it's an internal issue...
I did just google schematics for the NES and the Zapper, it looks like one of the pins for input is ONLY used for the Zapper trigger pull - I'm thinking maybe mine is bend, damaged in some way.
