 NRAO Press Release - 1/13/97 ( 13-Jan-1997)
NGC 4258 is the galaxy in which a warped disk of water molecules was discovered in 1994.
The new radio observations of NGC 4258 are the first to show the exact location of the core of an AGN, and thus the first to allow measurement of the offset between the core and the detected emission closest to it.
The galaxy NGC 4258 also is known as Messier 106, and is visible in moderate-sized amateur telescopes in the nighttime winter sky of the northern hemisphere, near the Big Dipper.

XMM-Newton observed the Seyfert 1.9 galaxy NGC 4258 in December 2000.
These results can be explained by the relatively low nuclear absorption of NGC 4258 (which is in the range expected for its intermediate Seyfert type) and some variability of the absorbing material.
Reflection components as proposed to explain the large iron line EW of highly absorbed Seyfert 2 galaxies and/or variations in the accretion disk are however imposed by the time variability of the iron line flux.

In the case of NGC 253, NGC 3079 and NGC 4258 the geometrical interpretation of the measured emission components is relatively simple, thus allowing the determination of the electron density and mass of the thermal gas.

It is important to note that these measurements are sufficient to estimate a "geometric" distance to NGC 4258, one that is completely independent of the traditional astronomical distance indicators and related calibrations.

Contrary to previous interpretations, we suggest that the anomalous arms in NGC 4258 trace the gas flow due to a bar rather than being the manifestation of a jet.
In the bar of NGC 4258 most of the gas is molecular, not atomic.

The bright Sb spiral galaxy NGC 4258 (M106) shines at apparent magnitude 8.3 and is easily visible in small amateur telescopes (possibly even through all the “haze”).
Following the spiral arms in the sense of rotation, and most conspicuous on images of NGC 4258, is the yellowish remnant of an older spiral arm.
If the connection between the galaxy and the quasars is real, this could be convincing evidence that some quasars are indeed ejected from galaxies and could be a major breakdown in the theory for their acceptance at cosmological distances.

The observational data of NGC 4258 is extremely abundant, including water maser emission, putting very strict constraints to its theoretical models.
Up until now there is no model which can explain such a steep spectrum, and we here propose a coupled jet plus accretion disk model for NGC 4258.
The accretion disk is composed of an inner ADAF (or radiatively inefficient accretion flow) and an outer standard thin disk.

Abstract: NGC 4258 is a low luminosity Seyfert II galaxy in which water maser emission arises in a very thin accretion disk around a supermassive fl hole of 4 x 10^7 M_solar.
The detected part of the molecular portion of the disk has an outer radius of about 0.3 pc and is nearly edge-on.
At a distance of about 0.2 pc from the central fl hole, along the diameter perpendicular to the line of sight, the toroidal component of the B field is

We also find that the position-velocity diagram calculated for a disc with a warping perturbation pattern is consistent with the observed redward offset of the low-velocity maser features, if the maser emission arises from the upper-half part of the disc.

From the speed of the dust (900 km/sec) rotating around the galactic center, astronomers have calculated that the mass of the central gravitating body has a mass of almost 40 million solar masses, all within a radius of 0.13 parsec.
James Moran of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, reporting the new results at the AAS meeting on behalf of his Japanese- American collaboration, believes that the profile of high-speed gas provides "compelling evidence" that the central object is a fl hole.
The high-resolution pictures of the heart of NGC 4258 were made with the Very Long Baseline Array, a network of radio telescopes located from Hawaii to the Virgin Islands.

The fl hole, and a 800 light-year-wide spiral-shaped disk of dust fueling it, are slightly offset from the center of their host galaxy, NGC 4261, located 100 million light-years away in the direction of the constellation Virgo.
Prior to Hubble observations, astronomers did not think dust was common in elliptical galaxies like NGC 4261, which were thought to have stopped making stars long ago due to the absence of the requisite raw materials: interstellar gas and dust.
Hubble detected a 2.4-billion-solar-mass fl hole was identified in the core of elliptical galaxy M87 in 1994, and later that year, astronomers using a radio telescope array to examine the dynamics of a thin, warped disk of molecules deep in the core of spiral galaxy NGC 4258 measured a 40-million-solar-mass fl hole.

Why Does NGC 1068 Have a More Powerful Active Galactic Nucleus than NGC 4258 ?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The nuclear gas kinematics probed by water vapor maser emission has shown that two nearby active galaxies, NGC 1068 and NGC 4258, have a supermassive object in their nuclei and their masses are nearly comparable; a few 10$^7$ solar masses.
Nevertheless, the activity of the central engine of NGC 1068 is more powerful by two orders of magnitude than that of NGC 4258.
Comparing the kinematical properties of the accreting molecular clouds between NGC 1068 and NGC 4258, we find possible evidence for dynamical gas accretion in NGC 1068, which may be responsible for the more powerful central engine in this galaxy.
