The NGC was compiled in the 1880s by Dreyer[?] using observations mostly from William Herschel, and then subsequently expanded with two Index Catalogues (ICs).
Together with nearly 5,000 objects in the two ICs, the NGC naturally contained many errors which have for the most part been eliminated by the Revised NGC[?].

The lower branch of the tuning fork diagram is largely a copy of the upper branch, but its occupants all have a line of stars through the centre - a bar. These are named SBx, where x is the lower case letter as in the unbarred cases above.
Of all the sights in the sky, the delicate clouds of gas and dust known as nebulae - the birthplaces and graveyards of the stars - are among the most stunning.

 Messier 87 (NGC 4486)
Messier 87 (NGC 4486) is at the heart of the Virgo cluster and has a mass many times that of the Milky Way, itself no lightweight.
Also, from the nucleus (but not seen here) extends a curious jet, all of which suggests that a massive fl hole is hidden in the bright core of the galaxy.

 Messier Object 87
This giant is situated between a number of apparently close neighbors, some of them are probably physical satellites, while others may be apparent neighbors because of projection effects only.
The brightest of these dwarf galaxies are: NGC 4476, NGC 4478, NGC 4486A, and NGC 4486B.
On very deep photographic plates, David Malin of the Anglo-Australian Observatory has found that M87 extends out even further; its outer parts are no more circular but significantly elongated, and the galaxy is over half a degree long in these exposures, more than the diameter of the Full Moon.

 Hubble NGC 4486 - M87 Photo
In this NASA Hubble Space Telescope image, the blue of the jet contrasts with the yellow glow from the combined light of billions of unseen stars and the yellow, point-like globular clusters that make up this galaxy.
At first glance, M87 (also known as NGC 4486) appears to be an ordinary giant elliptical galaxy; one of many ellipticals in the nearby Virgo cluster of galaxies.
However, as early as 1918, astronomer H.D. Curtis noted a "curious straight ray" protruding from M87.

[92.04] An Attempt to Probe the Jet Collimation Regions of NGC 4278, NGC 4374 and NGC 6166   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-28)
NRAO Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations of NGC 4278, NGC 4374 (M84), NGC 6166, and M87 (NGC 4486) have been made at 43 GHz in an effort to image the jet collimation region.
M87 was chosen as the calibrator for NGC 4374 because it satisfied the phase referencing requirements: nearby to the source and sufficiently strong.
Having observed M87 for a long integration time, we have detected its sub-parsec jet, allowing us to confirm previous high resolution observations made by Junor, Biretta & Livio, who have indicated that a wide opening angle was seen near the base of the jet.

We analyze two sets of archival Chandra observations of the giant elliptical galaxies NGC 4472 (M49) and NGC 4486 (M87) to identify point sources.
We identify a total of 211 X-ray sources in NGC 4472, and 55 sources in NGC 4486.
We also identify 25 SSS candidates in NGC 4472 and 3 in NGC 4486.

Messier 87 globular clusters   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-28)
Messier 87 (NGC 4486) lies near the centre of the nearby cluster of galaxies in Virgo at a distance of about 50 million light years.
The source for this extreme behavior is probably a massive fl hole at the centre of the galaxy.
