NGC 5195 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
NGC 5195 (also known as M51B) is a small barred spiral galaxy which was transformed into an irregular galaxy due to tidal forces induced by its larger neighbour M51.
NGC 5195 is a satellite galaxy of the famous Whirlpool Galaxy (M51).
NGC 5195 is tidally interacting with one M51's spiral arms.

 NGC 5195
NGC 5195, the companion of M51, was discovered by Pierre Méchain on March 20, 1781.
Because of Messier's description, NGC 5195 is sometimes considered as part of Messier Object 51; then the main galaxy, NGC 5194, is denoted M51 A. Independent of this, NGC 5195 is frequently referred to as M51 B. This galaxy has undergone a close encounter with the larger and more massive M51 several million years ago.
NGC 5195 can be seen in many images of M51.

Whirlpool Galaxy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Its companion galaxy, NGC 5195, was discovered in 1781 by Pierre Méchain.
In 2005 a supernova (SN 2005cs) was observed in the Whirlpool Galaxy, peaking at apparent magnitude 14.
NGC 5195 come from behind M51 through the disk towards the observer, made another disk crossing as recently as 50 to 100 Myrs ago until it is where we observe it to be now, slightly behind M51.

Their NGC designations are 5194 and 5195, with NGC 5195 included in the Herschel 400 observing list.
As a side note, many amateurs assume NGC 5195 is not part of M51.
Pierre Mechain discovered NGC 5195 in 1781 and his description, which clearly mentions both galaxies, was published in Messier's 1784 catalog.

NGC 5194 (also known as M51A) represents the magnificent spiral, while NGC 5195 (also known as M51B) is likely an irregular type dwarf galaxy now located behind the larger spiral galaxy.
The apparent spiral arm-bridge (northern arm) between the two galaxies is an illusion as NGC 5195 is far behind the NGC 5194, the near spiral arm being superimposed over the disk of NGC 5195 in the same line of sight.

The beautiful face-on spiral galaxy is designated NGC 5194, the smaller companion galaxy to the north NGC 5195.

Howard and Byrd have shown in the Astrophysical Journal the observed features of the M51/NGC 5195 system can be accounted for by a model that has the smaller companion completing two orbits around the larger host galaxy.

This sharpest-ever image of the galaxy M51 (NGC 5194), taken in January 2005 with the Advanced Camera for Surveys aboard the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, illustrates a spiral galaxy's grand design, from its curving spiral arms, where young stars reside, to its yellowish central core, a home of older stars.
The galaxy is nicknamed the Whirlpool because of its swirling structure.

Some astronomers believe that the Whirlpool's arms are so prominent because of the effects of a close encounter with NGC 5195, the small, yellowish galaxy at the outermost tip of one of the Whirlpool's arms.
Hubble's clear view, however, shows that NGC 5195 is passing behind the Whirlpool.
As NGC 5195 drifts by, its gravitational muscle pumps up waves within the Whirlpool's pancake-shaped disk.
