NGC 6712 has a wide HB colour range, similar to those of the blue tail clusters NGC 6388 and NGC 6441 (Rich et al.
= 0.0, implying that the reddening of NGC 6712 is the same as that of NGC 6171 (H96), estimated to be E(B-V) = 0.33.
NGC 6712 is thus one of the few globular clusters presenting Long Period Variables, which is an indication that it is rather metal rich (Rosino 1978).

Globular cluster Messier 5 (M5, NGC 5904) was first seen by Gottfried Kirch and his wife Maria Margarethe on May 5, 1702, when they observed a comet, and described as a "nebulous star".
One of the other variables is a dwarf nova, according to Cecilia Payne-Gaposhkin (she also mentions two more dwarf novae in the globulars M30 and NGC 6712).
To the west of M5 and up to 110 Virginis is a collection of faint distant galaxies including NGCs 5806, 5811, 5813, 5814, 5831, 5838, 5839, 5845, 5846, 5846A, 5848, 5850, 5854, 5864, 5865, 5869 and 5887, of brightnesses between mag 10.0 and 13.9, mostly requiring larger telescopes.

Astronomy Online - Messier Cross Reference
It is the "modern" Messier Catalog for amateur astronomers that seek deep sky delights that are both challenging and rewarding; however there are no Messier listings in the Caldwell Catalog.
An additional listing is the column "Finest NGC Object" list, a list compiled by Alan Dyer (a 'competitive' list to the Caldwell Catalog).
While there are no Caldwell or Finest NGC counterparts to the Messier Objects, the table is filled in for completeness (and so you do not have to search the web to see if there are counterpart entries):

The clusters examined here are M 5 (=NGC 5904), 47 Tuc (=NGC 104), NGC 6528, and M 67 (=NGC 2682).
Abundances for NGC 6528 are averages of the determinations by Carretta et al.
Another important difference is the one between the abundance pattern of NGC 6528 and that of library stars of near-solar metallicity.

2 The cluster sample and age-dating method   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
The reference clusters are, respectively, M 15 (NGC 7078), M 3 (NGC 5272), NGC 6171 and 47 Tuc (NGC 104).
Due to the small [Fe/H] differences with respect to SW98, the cluster NGC 6171 has now moved to the third metallicity group where it has replaced M 5 (NGC 5904) as the reference cluster.
It is interesting to determine the age difference for two classic second-parameter pairs, namely NGC 288-NGC 362 and M 3-M 13 (NGC 6205), both contained in our sample.

In this poster, we present first results for the post-AGB star ZNG 1 in M5 (NGC 5904).
Previous studies have shown the star to have an effective temperature of about 41,000 K and a surface gravity of log g = 4.5.
