  Messier Object 27
The Dumbbell Nebula Messier 27 (M27, NGC 6853) is perhaps the finest planetary nebula in the sky, and was the first planetary nebula ever discovered.
On July 12, 1764, Charles Messier discovered this new and fascinating class of objects, and describes this one as an oval nebula without stars.
About 2deg to the West of M27 is inconspicuous open cluster NGC 6830, containing about 20-30 widely scattered stars; this cluster is about 5500 ly distant.

The reason for the overabundance of Be stars in NGC 330 is not known with certainty; the reason may be the very low content of heavy elements.
Until now, the fainter Be stars in NGC 330 have only been identified by means of photometric observations of their colours.
Photo 38c/98 is a reproduction from a 3 sec exposure of NGC 330 (no filtre), obtained in order to ensure the correct positioning of the individual slits during the subsequent MOS observation.

Astronomy Online - Messier Cross Reference
It is the "modern" Messier Catalog for amateur astronomers that seek deep sky delights that are both challenging and rewarding; however there are no Messier listings in the Caldwell Catalog.
An additional listing is the column "Finest NGC Object" list, a list compiled by Alan Dyer (a 'competitive' list to the Caldwell Catalog).
While there are no Caldwell or Finest NGC counterparts to the Messier Objects, the table is filled in for completeness (and so you do not have to search the web to see if there are counterpart entries):

Precise (1" or better) positions have been determined or verified for all the planetary nebulae appearing the NGC and IC catalogues.
Despite publication in 1990 of the "Strasbourg-ESO Catalogue of Planetary Nebulae", many of the objects there are given with either imprecise or simply incorrect coordinates.
The best published position for the open cluster (also NGC 2818) is in the ESO/Uppsala Survey of the ESO (B) Atlas, first listed by Holmberg et al.

Browsing through bibliography of planetary nebulae in hefty volumes of Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts, I came across a paper "A probable binary central star in the planetary nebula NGC 6853" (PASP 89, 139, 1977) by Kyle M. Cudworth of the Yerkes Observatory.
Mon, the unique nucleus of NGC 2346), but this was a little known detail I could add to a picture of a well-known object.
Having realized that the common-proper-motion companion was visible on many published pictures of the summer planetary, I decided to prepare a map which would show the nebula's extent in various colors (and the light of various ions) and also that pair of the stars.
