NGC 7009 has a bright central star at the center of a dark cavity bounded by a football-shaped rim of dense, blue and red gas.
The cavity and its rim are trapped inside smoothly-distributed greenish material in the shape of a barrel and comprised of the star's former outer layers.
NGC 7009 is 1, 400 light-years away in the constellation Aquarius.

NGC 7009 first expelled the green gas that now appears barrel shaped.
This green gas now confines stellar winds flowing from the central star, creating a jet which forms the ansae that appear in red at the tips.

Programa PIA 2003: "Kinematics of the ansae in NGC 7009"   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Abstract: A characterization of the kinematics of the ansae in NGC 7009 was made using high dispersion echelle spectra and archive narrow band HST images for measuring radial velocities and proper motions, respectively.
Assuming that the ansae are moving at equal and opposite velocity from the central star we obtain an average system radial velocity of -53 ± 2 km/s, the eastern ansa approaching and the western ansa receding at v_r= 6 ± 1 km/s respect to this value.
The goal of this project is to characterize the kinematics of the ansae in NGC 7009.

NGC 7009 is Oxygen rich because the O/C ratio exceeds 1.
With the help of the model, a comparison of the Hamilton data with the previous image-tube scanner (ITS) data suggests that a variation in nitrogen abundance may exist in NGC 7009, a result in harmony with that obtained by Balick et al (1994).

The NGC records it as "a magnificent object, very bright, small and elliptic." Lord Rosse coined its popular name, Saturn, after the extending rays, or ansae, which project from the main disc on either side.
In the 5th edition of Webb's Celestial Objects for Common Telescopes it is described as "planetary: somewhat elliptic: very bright for an object of this nature: pale blue; not well defined in 5.5-foot achromatic, but bearing magnifying more like a planet than a common nebula.
Houston calls this nebula "one of the brightest planetaries in the heavens, and its oval 8th mag disk is easy to spot with small telescopes.

The high-excitation planetary nebula NGC 7009 and its central star were observed by the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) satellite in the wavelength range 905-1187 Å\ at a spectral resolution of \lambda/\Delta\lambda ~15,000.
Although IUE spectra show that stellar C IV 1550 is absent and N V 1240 is weak, the FUSE spectrum reveals a very strong O VI 1032-38 P-Cygni line profile with a terminal velocity of ~3500 km/sec.
