NGL was the result of research performed during 2001-2004 by E.
Initially, the J programming language was used, but soon it was decided to create a new language on top of it, one that would support a different notation style, along with pattern matching and related syntax.
NGL incorporates the FL programming language's user-defined datatype features that were not implemented in J. is intended to support and extend Iverson's and Backus' ideas that programming language notation is an important factor in determining the expressive power of the language.

The reason many of them apply to all these languages is that array-based languages tend to have a small scope.
Another reason for not using such languages is that they are not very effective in virtually all other areas of programming.
As most programs that use arrays also make use of many other features (that Nial does not provide in a desired way), and people want a more complete language than Nial for simplicity and clarity.

The reasons for constructing languages cover a wide range of reasons, from proposals to enhance international communication, to the creation of more logical languages to enhance thinking or specialized forms of communication, to exploring linguistic theory through model-building, as background for fictional creation, as art for art's sake, and just for fun.

Interpreted languages are those languages that get generated into machine code that is used by the microprocessor as the code is executed.
Because they are generated into machine code on-the-fly, interpreted languages execute more slowly than compiled programs written in C or C++ (programs that are translated into non-readable binary code that is used directly by the microprocessor for program execution).

Look at languages, like ProLog, that make fifth generation claims and the best you can say is that there are four -not five- phases in the binary generation process - making it a 4GL; albeit not one aimed at business applications.

As of 2004, most current programming languages fit into this description, likely as a consequence of the extensive domination of the von Neumann computer architecture during the past 50 years.
