As in past years, NHK Symphony Orchestra will proudly present a wide repertoire of works throughout the 2005/06 season which is sure to delight its listeners.

A pity, then, that the SSCL chose to present this orchestra at one of the worst acoustical halls in Singapore (bar the Indoor Stadium).
This was especially notable in the second movement, with paired clarinets and pizzicato strings accompanying the soloist's rendition of the main theme, although there were some instances in the movement where Min abandoned delving into the (heavy) Russian spirituality and tended to run away with her idiosyncracies.
But on to the music itself, and the NHK was as good (at least) as its reputation promised.

The NHK Symphony Orchestra began life on October 5, 1926 as the "New Symphony Orchestra," Japan's first professional orchestra, and gave its first subscription concert under Hidemaro Konoe on February 20 of the following year.
After a change of name to the "Japan Symphony Orchestra" in 1942, Kazuo Yamada and Hisatada Otaka were appointed Principal Conductors and subscription concerts continued unbroken during the Second World War and postwar turmoil.

The 3rd movement was alike to the first in terms of the dull and flat music produced, and even the runup to the conclusion fail to produce any climax to the piece at all.
It was amazing, the level of transparency and clarity each section of the orchestra contributed their part to the whole, such that never have I heard individual parts and simultaneously the whole so vividly before.
My mouth was left open for much of the symphony, and the audience cannot wait for the symphony to end to burst out into clamorous applause.
