The NHK Trophy is the third leg of the six-round Grand Prix series following Skate America and Skate Canada, counting toward the Grand Prix Final in Beijing in December.
The women skaters are the main draw at the NHK Trophy here in the absence of of Russian men’s champion Yevgeny Plushenko, who said earlier he would skip five of the six Grand Prix events this year to rest a knee injury.
Plushenko, men’s world champion in 2001, 2003 and 2004 and also the winner here three times, has said earlier that he would skip the Grand Prix events except for the Moscow leg due to poor health and a recurring knee injury.

(11/23/05) - 2005 World ice dancing silver medalists Tanith Belbin & Ben Agosto announced today their withdrawal from 2005 NHK Trophy in Osaka, Japan, due to an injury sustained by Agosto.
Agosto said he expects to make a full recovery in time for the 2006 State Farm U.S. Championships.

Besides the British Airways Cup, Kanto Gakuin was awarded the Mikasanomiya Hirohito Trophy, Japan Rugby Association Chairman Trophy and NHK Cup.
Kanto Gakuin University has won the championship of the 35th National University Rugby Tournament, defeating Meiji University 47-28 in a hard-fought final match on Jan. 15 at National Stadium in Tokyo.
The win was Kanto Gakuin's second successive title, making it only the fourth club to achieve back-to-back victories.
