NHL Rivals 2004 for Xbox Review - Xbox NHL Rivals 2004 Review
Rivals 2004 is a simulation-style hockey game that clearly draws influence from gameplay elements found in both EA and Sega's NHL games.
Rivals' primary player controls, when in possession of the puck, include deke, pass, dump, and shoot buttons, while dive, stick check, body check, and player switch buttons are used when not in control of the puck.
NHL Rivals 2004 is most certainly geared to cater to fans of simulation hockey but lacks the cohesive gameplay of its competitors.

Rivals’ fight system is good too, actually allowing you to decide if you want to fight or avoid it completely (but let’s face it, you’ll most likely be dropping the gloves every time).
And NHL Rivals 2004’s on-ice player animations are weak, with only a few basic animated moves for any player, nowhere near the total you’ll see in EA Sports’ latest offering.
Much like a NHL expansion team that does unexpectedly well in its initial campaign but doesn’t have any realistic chance of competing for even a number-eight seed playoff spot, NHL Rivals 2004 is a good start for Microsoft’s hockey franchise, but needs many more superstar elements to challenge its competition in the hockey game arena.

Microsoft is hoping to capture some of that Cup craziness in NHL Rivals 2004, which has a plethora of game modes and features that should satisfy even the most rabid hockey fan.
NHL Rivals 2004 is scheduled to hit store shelves in the fall and will be Xbox Live enabled.
But the biggest asset by far is that Rivals 2004 will join the other Microsoft sports titles NFL Fever and Inside Pitch (and I well suspect the 2004 edition of Inside Drive) as Xbox Live compatible.

NHL Rivals 2004 has lot of room for improvement, but it doesn’t have what it needs to compete this year.

The difference between NHL Rivals and other games in this regard is that the other hockey games have sliders which can be used to tailor different aspects of the gameplay to your preference, allowing for a more enjoyable experience despite (or because of) the increased difficulty.
NHL Rivals has no such sliders; the difficulty settings are as they are, which makes for either a boring or frustrating gameplay experience, respectively.

There is no denying that NHL Rivals 2004 looks good, but the hockey game underneath the pretty graphics leaves a lot to be desired.
Simple straightforward hockey was fine back on the SNES, but sports fans want to be a little more involved in their games these days and Rivals 2004 simply can’t compete with what EA and Sega have done this year.
The only thing the least bit innovative about Rivals 2004 is that you can pass with the right thumbstick, and that seriously pales in comparison with what you can do in other games.

During a game, role-specific situations will crop up, and you'll have to hit the B button to execute a "role move." "NHL Rivals 2004" includes single exhibition, full season, playoffs and tournament modes, but lacks the "franchise mode" so popular with sports video games.

Finally, in early 2002, the green light was given to start internal development on "Project Cujo", the codename for NHL Rivals.
We had always envisioned that this title would be the start of a series of hockey titles under the "Rivals" banner, so it was important to establish a franchise vision that defined not only what kind of game we wanted to make in 2004, but also for future versions of the title.

GREG S: I have given a name to my pain, and it is NHL Rivals.
Rivals is fundamentally flawed: Your teammates constantly wander offside; you actually slow down when you get the puck; players are called for roughing when all they did was bump into another guy; goalies never leave the crease; penalty shots are never called.
Granted, Rivals is clearly not the best hockey game in town, but for a first effort, it could’ve been worse.
