 NHSRA Wrangler Junior High Division - Dedicated to Junior High level rodeo competition
NHSRA recognizes that it is fairly common for companies to evolve promotional relationships with partners or sponsored organizations based on brand needs, market needs or other opportunities/issues over time.
According to Choice hotel company representatives, the decision to move from being an official sponsor was based on a number of factors, including overall marketing strategy, as well as animal welfare issues raised by critics of the sport of rodeo.
NHSRA has worked with Choice Hotels beginning in 2006 to systematically review issues raised and provide Choice company representatives with information.

The NHSRA offers a rodeo program that sets high school rodeo apart from other varsity sports: Athletes compete on a scale comparable to collegiate and professional rodeo competitors.

We provided information regarding our policies relating to the care and handling of rodeo livestock at our events and answers to specific questions raised as well as documentation from veterinarians showing the extremely low rate of injury and illness to rodeo livestock at NHSRA events, specifically the National High School Finals Rodeo.
Following the completion of this review, Choice informed NHSRA that the information they reviewed and which was presented from various parties was not entirely conclusive on either side of the equation.
Choice continues to provide substantial discounts to NHSRA members and participants, and their contract with our organization continues through the contract period ending December 31, 2009.

Rachel Oates, 16, of Nacogdoches has been serving as runner-up to the NHSRA Queen since last summer, but when Rodeo Queen Kendal Rae Heiner of Utah was recently stripped of the title due to a drinking incident, Oates was asked to step up to the tasks.
One of the top tasks of the NHSRA Queen involves organizational and hands-on work at the upcoming NHSRA Finals in July - ranging the Special Kids event to the daily rodeo performances including the grand entry.
NHSRA executive director Kent Sturman said officers are not allowed to drink alcohol.

Texas educator Claude Mullins developed the NHSRA in the late 1940s as a way to convince ranch kids in his state to stay in school and earn their diplomas.
The association was incorporated in 1961 in South Dakota and nearly 300 contestants from 20 states took part in the national finals that year.
Today, the NHSRA's main purpose is to provide members with opportunities to continue their educations beyond the high-school level.

The Ariat High School Rodeo Student President's scholarship program was started two years ago by Ariat Boot Company as a way of recognizing those NHSRA members, who through their leadership skills, do the most to insure the success of their respective high school rodeo associations.
It is the sponsorship support that the NHSRA receives from its valuable corporate partners that allows it to assist with the development of dedication, leadership.
