Topic: NID (Stargate)

Portal:Stargate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Stargates are large, ring-shaped devices in the Stargate science fiction universe that utilize advanced technology for nearly instantaneous personal travel across the vast distances of space.
The Stargate is the central plot generator of these productions, allowing for stories focused on a small team of protagonists exploring other planets and meeting other races on foot, rather than the more prevalent, grandiose "space opera" of interstellar starships seen elsewhere in science fiction.
Stargates are present on many planets but, to primitive peoples, they are no more than relics carrying associations of the divine and sacred, or of fear, as evidenced by such names as "Ring of the Gods" and "Circle of Darkness".

 Arduinna's Stargate SG-1 Handbook: NID
The NID was running an authorized mission (headed by Agent Cross and Agent Singer) to take advantage of the fact that a subsidiary (Immunitech Research) of Adrian Conrad's old company (Zetatron Industries) was continuing his research, and had cloned many Goa'uld symbiotes from the one implanted in Conrad.
The mission to PX3-595 (an Asgard-protected planet, where the natives, known as Tiernods, are primitive, and hide from predators in caves, using an Asgard device to vanish) was to steal the Asgard vanishing device for the rogue organization.
On Maybourne's urging, the NID attempts to gain access to the orb that attacked Jack, in the hope that it would be a weapon that could be used against the Goa'uld.

Robert Kinsey - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Kinsey and the NID appeared hell-bent on shutting down the Stargate program, citing its cost and ineffectiveness in defeating the Goa'uld, though SG-1 has learned that the NID's true motive is to exploit the alien technology that could be obtained through the Stargate.
In "Chain Reaction" he seeked to use the NID to control the Stargate and is implicated in Harry Maybourne's illegal offworld operation, but got away scot-free by allowing General George Hammond to retake command of the SGC.
After his resignation from the Vice-Presidency he was cast off by The Trust, a conglomeration of businessmen that, through various questionable connections, have learned of the Stargate's existence and are attempting to exploit it (and the alien technology obtained from off-world) for their own personal monetary and political gain.

The NID has proven to be particulary succeptible to corruption in the past, with the agents wanted or imprisoned for treason numbering in the dozens.

GateWorld - Stargate SG-1 Season Five: '48 Hours'
Colonel Frank Simmons, from the NID, arrives at the SGC with Dr. McKay -- whom he claims is the foremost authority on Stargate technology.
Dr. McKay has been studying the Stargate program out of Area 51 for over a year, using a virtual computer model of the gate that was built while the second gate (now in use at the SGC) was there ("Touchstone").
Though it has had ties to the NID in the past (especially in the form of Colonel Maybourne), McKay claims that he works for the Air Force, and not for Colonel Simmons (an NID operative).

 Arduinna's Stargate SG-1 Handbook: Russians
Had a stargate program of sorts going before even getting a stargate -- someone recognized DHD symbols in a Russian archaeologist's report and suppressed the knowledge, and the Russians later added that gate address to the ones supplied by Colonel Maybourne.

GateWorld - Stargate SG-1 Season Four: 'Chain Reaction'
The NID is based at Nellis Air Force Base, and operates "Area 51" -- the top-secret facility where technology discovered by SG teams is sent and analyzed ("Touchstone").
Maybourne also confirmed that the NID was behind the offworld operation he oversaw, where remote teams stole alien technology and smuggled them back to Earth ("Shades of Grey").
This would date back to the beginning of Season Three -- long after he shut down the gate in "Politics," and after the beta gate was recovered from NID personnel in "Touchstone" -- though his involvement with the group may predate what his computer records indicate.
