	Departments and Centers
		The Department of Chemistry is one of the pioneer departments started right from the inception of NITK in the year 1960.
		This is one of the oldest branch of the college that was started with a goal to train personnel in the area of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering who can be pioneers in designing, building, running of Metallurgical Industries required for the country in Research and Development activities.

	The Hindu : Karnataka / Mangalore News : NITK, KMC hospitals sign pact
		According to the NITK Director, S.S. Murthy, under the scheme, the NITK staff can avail themselves of medical benefits directly from the hospital and the bills would be paid by the institute, depending upon the eligibility of the staff.
		The NITK would hold its Foundation Day Celebrations on Friday where a number of projects would be launched, Dr. Murthy said.
		They included commencement of the work on the ambitious centre for yogic research, holistic health and continuing education, inauguration of tree planting on the NITK campus, release of the constitution of the NITK alumni association and a workshop on `Vision 2010 NITK', Dr. Murthy said.

		Fernandes said that because of the late Srinivas Mallya's concern for the overall development of the region, the NITK (formerly Karnataka Regional Engineering College) was standing tall.

	Instrumentation lab worth 1 crore in NITK’s plan - Deccan Herald (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-18)
		National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal, is planning to establish a state-of-the-art instrumentation laboratory with an investment of nearly Rs 1 crore under the World Bank funded project on Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP) operated through the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development.
		According to NITK Director Prof S S Murthy, the laboratory facility will be useful for various academic departments of NITK for teaching, research and consultancy, apart from other technical institutions, industries and research and development organisations located in the neighbourhood.
		Meanwhile, the NITK has been identified as one of the leading institutions among the centrally funded institutions in the country for TEQIP and it will receive about Rs 50 crore over a period of five years.

		The memorandum of understanding will help NITK adopt "effective e-learning strategy", create e-learning content and develop systems to monitor students' academic performance.
		NITK will use these tools to prepare e-learning material for the formal engineering degree programs, for teaching pre-university students of science subjects (to help prepare them for the various national engineering entrance examinations) and prepare e-learning material in science and technology subjects for the general public, focused on popularizing science.

	NITK students bag prizes in national-level symposium - Deccan Herald (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-18)
		Joy Nithin Pinto and Yuvaraj Tejasvi, students of sixth semester, Department of Metallurgical Engineering, NITK, Surathkal, have won first place in paper presentation competition and second place in quiz competition at the ‘COMPSIT’, national-level technical symposium held at IIT Kharagpur recently, says a release from the NITK.
		The best overall performing institute trophy was also given to NITK, Surathkal, the release said.
		The NITK students team was guided by Dr K N Hebbar and assisted by Girish Kumar, the NITK release said.
