NKK Corp. is now applying a new method to its flaw detection system that uses chirp wave pulse compression technology.
NKK has recently tested the system on existing ultrasonic flaw detection equipment for plates, seamless pipes, and rails, and has confirmed the system's commercial advantages.
To date, chirp wave pulse compression technology has been used in radar applications, but NKK is the first to apply it to commercial on-line ultrasonic flaw detection, made possible as a result of the company's development of high speed digital filtering and optimized correlative processing technologies.

Japanese steelmaker NKK is tackling this nondestructive evaluation problem with its novel inspection system known as ‘Delta-Eye’, which uses polarised light to pick up even the finest surface problems, and then highlights these tiny defects on the coils of material shipped to manufacturers.
Having installed its first commercial system on the hot-dip continuous galvanising line at its Fukuyama works three years ago, NKK has just recently put two new systems in place on another continuous galvanising line and a continuous annealing line at the same plant, expanding the application of the system to cold rolled sheets.
NKK is also using it to inspect other types of strip produced on the lines on which the system is installed, and it is possible to apply it to materials other than steel strips.
