Neuro-linguistic programming   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
NLP as a discipline is pragmatic, meaning that it is interested in knowledge that is useful in applications.
NLP strongly encourages enhanced and multiple viewpoints, on the basis that many problems which are symptomatic of a perceived restriction or limitation, result from a lack of awareness and belief in other possible choices.
NLP's development has always been strongly empirical; the techniques and patterns developed in the field come from repeated observations, and all of the most common NLP techniques are continually submitted to testing during ongoing practitioner trainings around the world.

 What is NLP?
NLP is a multi-dimensional process that involves the development of behavioral competence and flexibility, but also involves strategic thinking and an understanding of the mental and cognitive processes behind behavior.
NLP provides tools and skills for the development of states of individual excellence, but it also establishes a system of empowering beliefs and presuppositions about what human beings are, what communication is and what the process of change is all about.
NLP was originated by John Grinder (whose background was in linguistics) and Richard Bandler (whose background was in mathematics and gestalt therapy) for the purpose of making explicit models of human excellence.

Neuro-linguistic programming - Enpsychlopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
NLP was co-created in the early 1970s by Richard Bandler and John Grinder, with the collaboration of Robert Dilts and Judith Delozier, from patterns derived from "modeling" several well-known psychotherapists, namely Fritz Perls, Virginia Satir, and Milton Erickson.
NLP's development has always been empirical in the loosest possible sense; the techniques and patterns developed in the field come from repeated observations, and all of the most common NLP techniques are continually submitted to testing during ongoing practitioner trainings around the world.
In sum, NLP can broadly be described as a type of psychotherapy which has been marketed to the general public using a broad brush approach to solutions, and adopts conveniently broad and simple terms, popular psychology, and pseudoscience to promote its efficacy.

NLP can be taught through seminars and training programs, but also through self-study by using techniques and exploring.
NLP practitioners consider the mind and physical body as a system; that is, each influences the other.
Ecology in NLP is about respecting the integrity of the system as a whole when assessing a change to that system; the 'system' in this case is a person's model of the world and the consequences of that model in the person's life.

NLP notes that for human beings to "think" we use the representational systems of the five senses:sight, hearing, feeling, touch and taste.
The two communication maps are neurological and linguistic; neuro, refers to our nervous system/mind and how it processes information and codes it as memory inside our body (neurology); linguistic indicates that the neural processes of the mind come coded, ordered, and given meaning through language.
NLP takes cognisance of the limitedness of words in its own communication model hence there is a significant focus on the need to develop sensory acuity skills, which train our ability to see, listen and read more effectively and consciously non-verbal communication cues.

The cornerstone of NLP is the principle that "the map is not the territory." Initially formulated by General Semantics Founder Alfred Korzybski, this principle acknowledges the fundamental distinction between our maps of the world and the world itself.
Anthropologist and early NLP influence Gregory Bateson liked to say that "the name is not the thing named." When we use words to describe experience, not only are the words themselves not the experience, but the experience these words are describing may not actually be in the 'real world'.
