  NMEA instruments - Euronav
Whilst NMEA greatly simplifies interfacing of marine instruments, it can sometimes be a troublesome business, especially when interfacing with personal computers, or where many devices need to be connected, perhaps over relatively large distances.
NMEA and RS232 operate on slightly differing signal voltage levels and with some older equipment there is a danger of unreliable communication and possible damage to the computer serial port unless a suitable interface cable is used.
An NMEA Booster increases the signal strength, allowing a greater number of devices to be connected.

 NMEA 0183 Multiplexer for 4 NMEA-talkers on 1 RS232 computer port
Data from Seatalk marine instruments is converted into standard NMEA format and is output via the RS232 output port together with NMEA data from other instruments, connected to the 3 other channels.
The availability of the NMEA combiner makes it no longer necessary that for compatibility all instruments have to be of the same product-range or the same manufacturer, as the standard NMEA format now allows combining and mixing of different brands of instruments.

 NMEA data
NMEA is designed to run as a process in the background spitting out sentences which are then captured as needed by the using program.
NMEA consists of sentences, the first word of which, called a data type, defines the interpretation of the rest of the sentence.
Because an NMEA sentence is limited to 80 characters there may need to be multiple sentences to identify all of the waypoints.

Since decoding the NMEA 0183 standard is the key to integrating GPS data in your VB, C# or C++ project, let's examine some strategies for handling NMEA 0183 output.
When reading NMEA 0183 data, it is important that the code be flexible enough to gather similar data from multiple sources.
So as we can see, the NMEA 0183 standard is simple and straightforward, but, as with all things, it's the details that cause the headaches.

NMEA 0183, and 2000, data packets are being send over Ethernet connections like NavNet and Raymarine's new SeaTalkHS right now, but my understanding is that Ethernet is not a practical protocol for items like speed transducers, nor is it reliable enough to run throttles and shifts, which is another aspect of NMEA 2000.
NMEA 2000 is designed to live in those sort of sensors, and is also capable of controlling critical devices like throttle and shift.
