Peyton Place: Film Music CD Reviews-September 2000
This opening track closes with a cosy, tranquil, almost nocturnal pastoral evocation and the mood is carried over into the opening of the following cue, 'Entering Peyton Place'.
Peyton Place, based on Grace Metalious's sensational, scandalous (for its time), best-selling and immensely popular novel was filmed in 1957, with Lana Turner, Hope Lange, Russ Tamblyn, Arthur Kennedy and Diane Varsi in the central role of Alison MacKenkie.
During the recording sessions for Peyton Place, the film's producer, Jerry Wald wrote:- " Every musician on the lot is highly enthusiastic about Franz Waxman's score for PEYTON PLACE, from Alfred Newman on down to the members of the orchestra who recognize the score as a masterful job and a great achievement in scoring.

Carl Maria von Weber - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
While much of Weber's piano music has fallen out of the repertory, his orchestral overtures, his clarinet music and his opera 'Der Freischutz' remain regularly performed.
Weber's colourful harmonies and orchestration, the use of popular themes from central European folk music, and the gloomy (gothic) libretto, complete with an appearance of the Devil himself in a nocturnal forest, have all helped to ensure its popularity.
In 1800, the family moved to Freiberg, in Saxony, where Weber, then 14 years old, wrote an opera called Das stumme Waldmädchen (The silent forest maiden), which was produced at the Freiberg theatre.

Benjamin Britten Encyclopedia Article @ GreatArtworks.com (Great Artworks)
Britten was however encountering opposition from sectors of the English musical establishment and gradually withdrew from the London scene, founding the English Opera Group in 1947 and the Aldeburgh Festival the following year, partly (though not solely) to showcase his own works.
One of Britten's solo works that has an indisputably central place in the repertoire of its instrument is his Nocturnal after John Dowland for guitar (1964).
There Britten composed Paul Bunyan, his first opera (to a libretto by Auden), as well as the first of many song-cycles for Pears; the period was otherwise remarkable for a number of orchestral works, including Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge (for string orchestra) and Sinfonia da Requiem (for full orchestra).

Britten's subsequent operas, including the Church Parables that draw inspiration from Japan and the remarkable operatic version of Thomas Mann's Death in Venice, Britten's last opera, constitute a very significant element in dramatic and operatic repertoire.
Britten's chamber music includes a Cello Sonata and three Cello Suites for his friend the Russian cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, a fine Suite for the Welsh harpist Osian Ellis and a Nocturnal after John Dowland for the guitarist Julian Bream.
Britten won a triumph in 1945 with his opera Peter Grimes, first staged when the Sadler's Wells in London re-opened after the 1939-1945 war.

A section of this opera featured Taglioni’s daughter, the famous ballerina Marie Taglioni, as an abbess leading the spirits of lapsed nuns in a bacchanal in the moonlit cloisters of a ruined abbey.
Set in a graveyard, the dance, a bacchanal led by Taglioni’s daughter, the ballerina Marie Taglioni, was dominated by an eerie, nocturnal, atmospheric setting that featured erotic and demonic elements.
Taglioni’s La Sylphide was revived in 1858 and then disappeared from the repertoire of the Paris Opera Ballet.

 MUENCHNER . PHILHARMONIKER
In keeping with this genre, the preludes to the three acts are not autonomous, stand-alone "overtures", but are rather all determined exclusively by motives and themes that figure importantly in the opera itself and run through it as leading motives.
The title character of the opera "Palestrina" sees himself as no different from the way Pfitzner regarded himself: composer of the papal chapel in Rome, master of polyphony and heir to an old art form, who stood at the end of a great epoch.
Palestrina, since his wife´s death a broken man, unwaveringly refuses, but in a nocturnal apparition the old masters, led on by Josquin des Prés, remind him of his moral obligation toward the art, and he composes the mass in a single night, thus becoming the celebrated redeemer of liturgical music.

Varda gently edits the piece around the new words that the students are learning to pronounce and write that evening, on of them being nocturnal activity, which humorously enough is exactly what they and their teacher are engaged in.
Varda's brilliance is most evident, however, in works like "Jacquot," a portrait of her late husband, filmmaker Jacques Demy ("Umbrellas of Cherbourg"), "Vagabond," and stunning shorts like "l'Opéra Mouffe" and "Salut les Cubains," that utilize the skills she honed during her early years as a photojournalist.
Varda is perhaps best known, however, for her talent as a documentarian, which enhanced both her fictional and non-fiction films.

Lyon makes a great show of its nocturnal lighting, and the city’s favourite festival is the Fête des Lumières, a conspiracy of candles and bulbs to ensure that, on December 8, there’s not an unlit nook to be found in the whole city.
One-hundred yards away is the Tour Métallique, whose resemblance to the Eiffel Tower isn’t coincidental: locals tell me that Lyon traditionally exercises its inferiority complex by replicating all Paris’s most notable accomplishments, albeit on a less grandiose scale.

"Le Marais: The Indifferent Ghetto" by SCOTT GUNTHER
It began in 1978 with the opening of Le Village, a new bar in the heart of Le Marais, which presented itself as an alternative to the nocturnal homosexual life that occurred in the shadows of the Opera House on the rue Sainte-Anne.
Le Village symbolized a new kind of visibility: open both day and night and offering beer for the meager sum of 10 francs, the bar attracted large crowds at once.
The Marais of the 90's results more from successful exploitation of a market niche than from any expression of identity politics-one more triumph for the logic of international commerce, but perhaps only a superficial accession, after all.

Joseph Losey's celebrated screen adaptation of Mozart's "Don Giovanni"
Losey transposed the action from Spain to Italy, from the nocturnal ambience of Seville to the natural beauty of the Veneto countryside, and assembled a star-studded cast.

Losey conjures up misty, pastel-colored images which create an excellent balance between the highly stylized artificiality of the operatic genre and its naturalistic backdrop.
