Aestheticism Articles | Intro to Manhwa
The Korean commercial comics industry, despite its relative infancy, is enormous, encompassing both impressive and rapid translations of a mind-boggling number of Japanese releases and a ballooning domestic creative sphere.
Actually, most Korean manhwa are fifteen years old or less, and in the genres for girls where the majority of Korean artists predominate, on eyeball approximation Korean manhwa represent between 30-40% of the total comic book volume (the remaining books are of course Korean translations of shoujo manga).
Now, let's move onto issues of style, which is both vital to any basic understanding of Korean manhwa and the most controversial of any manhwa-related topic.

Manhwa, in Korean, is a general term for comics and cartoons (including animated cartoons).
Although manhwa is distinct from Japanese manga and Chinese manhua, all three terms are cognates.
Manhwa is read in the same direction as Western books, horizontally and from left to right, because hangul is normally written and read horizontally (although it can also be written and read like Chinese and Japanese, that is, vertically from right to left).

The differences are primarily cosmetic; manhwa reads left to right, while manga reads right to left.
There's also a long-standing argument that the real difference between the two is that manhwa is of consistently lower quality than manga is, and is generally really derivative and unoriginal.

I've always been under the impression that Korean manhwa is the red-headed stepchild of the anime/manga hobby.

This manhwa doesn't really have any major strikes against it; the only reason it isn't rated higher is that it's getting off to a slow start and hasn't yet become emotionally involving enough to have me turning the pages and gagging for more.
