  Gould NPL
NPL was a relatively clean vector ISA with robust multiprocessing support, particularly with the NP2 extensions.
NPL's four primary weaknesses were its floating-point arithmetic, the I/O system, the interrupt system, and the compiler.
NPL's fundamental failing was that it was not the first or a compelling entry into a new company market and simultaneously was not a desirable product in the company's existing real-time market.

The NPL is a list of national priorities among the known or threatened releases of hazardous substances, pollutants, or contaminants throughout the United States.
The NPL is intended primarily to guide EPA in determining which sites warrant further investigation to assess the nature and extent of public health and environmental risks associated with a release of hazardous substances, pollutants or contaminants.
The NPL does not describe releases in precise geographical terms; it would be neither feasible nor consistent with the limited purpose of the NPL (to identify releases that are priorities for further evaluation), for it to do so.

The Nonpartisan League and Social Democracy   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
NPL support was especially strong among poor and heavily mortgaged farmers (Lundberg 1927), but that support held across commodity production groups and the period of NPL ascendancy was relatively stable.
Most importantly, NPL policies transferred class struggles from the economy to a democratic political sphere, moved the main mechanism of property-based control from private bankers to publicly-accountable state officials, and accelerated the tendency toward a falling rate of profit by creating firms that did not need to make a profit--each a class-biased outcome.
NPL officials had used their occupancy of the state one last time to institutionalize their class-biased policy, signing the contract the day before leaving office (Tostlebe 1924:148; Junker 1989:79-83).

NPL operates a UKAS accredited calibration laboratory and many of the acoustics measurement services are UKAS accredited.

Netscape Public License - GNU Project - Free Software Foundation (FSF)
The first problem I noticed in the NPL was that it does not give Netscape and the rest of us equal rights, as the GNU GPL does.
The NPL has the form of a copyleft; it explicitly says that all modifications made by users must be released under the NPL.
And because the NPL looks like a copyleft, some users may be confused about it, and might adopt the NPL, thinking that they are obtaining the benefits of copyleft for their software, when that is not the case.

eGov monitor Feature: Government IT in the 1950s: The Role of the National Physical Laboratory
Crucially, the NPL recognized at a reasonably early stage in its development that computers may have applications beyond the realms of science and war.
Thus, it is through the NPL that the concept of using computer technology for day-to-day departmental operations, and the delivery of public services was first developed; therefore the approach that the NPL took influenced the path that government IT followed for decades after.
NPL was certainly a technical organization, rather than a unit that would have been truly capable at guiding policy and implementation.

Inclusion of a site on the NPL does not in itself reflect a judgment of the activities of its owner or operator, it does not require those persons to undertake any action, nor does it assign liability to any person.
The NPL serves primarily informational purposes, identifying for the States and the public those sites or other releases that appear to warrant remedial actions.

 Technical History of NPL
About NPL Architecture: Donald Davies and his colleagues at the UK National Physical Laboratories independently developed the idea of packet switching, and developed a UK version of the ARPANET.
At the 1967 ACM Gatlinburg conference, Lawrence Roberts met Donald Davies and Roger Scantlebury from the NPL, who had published a paper at the conference called "A Digital Communications Network for Computers".
The Mark I was replaced with an improved network called the Mark II in 1973, and remained in operation until 1986, but it never had the funding to develop on the scale of the ARPANET.

ATSDR - 1997 CERCLA Priority List of Hazardous Substances   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
It should be noted that this priority list is not a list of "most toxic" substances, but rather a prioritization of substances based on a combination of their frequency, toxicity, and potential for human exposure at NPL sites.
Thus, it is possible for substances with low toxicity but high NPL frequency of occurrence and exposure to be on this priority list.
The objective of this priority list is to rank substances across all NPL hazardous waste sites to provide guidance in selecting which substances will be the subject of toxicological profiles prepared by ATSDR.
