  Net Present Value (NPV)
NPV is used in capital budgeting to analyze the profitability of an investment or project.
NPV analysis is sensitive to the reliability of future cash inflows that an investment or project will yield.
NPV compares the value of a dollar today to the value of that same dollar in the future, taking inflation and returns into account.

  Net Present Value (NPV)
NPV is a way of making costs and benefits occurring in different years commensurable.
NPV forecasts when the investment will generate sufficient cash flows to repay the invested capital and provide the required rate of return on that capital.
Because all cash flows are discounted back to the present time, the NPV compares the difference between the present value of the benefits and costs and takes into account what the project gives up to get these benefits, or the opportunity costs of both cash flows.

  NPV
NPV is similar to the PV function (present value).
The primary difference between PV and NPV is that PV allows cash flows to begin either at the end or at the beginning of the period.
NPV is also related to the IRR function (internal rate of return).

CCH Business Owner's Toolkit | Net Present Value of Major Purchases
If the NPV is greater than the cost, the project will be profitable for you (assuming, of course, that your estimated cash flow is reasonably close to reality).
However, using NPV analysis you can determine that if the discount rate on the project was 10 percent, the net present value of the expected returns would be $7,581.60.
NPV analysis is generally used to evaluate the project's cash flows, rather than the income from the project that would be shown on an income statement.

FinAid | Loans | Net Present Value
Calculating NPV is difficult, in part, because it isn't clear what discount rate should be used, nor is it clear how to project future changes in the discount rate.
The NPV of a loan under standard amortization equals the original loan balance when the discount rate is set to the APR of the loan interest rate.
But since the relative order of the NPV values for different loans depends on the discount rate (i.e., whether it is higher or lower than the APR of the interest rate under standard amortization), care should be exercised in the choice of a discount rate.

NPV and IRR -- Measures for Evaluating Investments
The net present value (NPV) of a whole income stream is the sum of these present values of the individual amounts in the income stream.
The NPV box on the right shows the net present value, which is the total of the amounts in the boxes in the Discounted row.  (The total may be slightly off, due to rounding.)
The green line investment has a lower NPV than the red line investment at all discount rates, because it has lower profits in years 1 through 5, and the same costs in years 0 and 6.  In particular, as the table above indicates, it has a lower NPV at the 0.05 discount rate.
