NRAO is the constructor/owner of the world's largest fully mobile radio telescope, the Green Bank Telescope, which resides in Green Bank, West Virginia.

General NRAO Issues A general NRAO issue that the Users' Committee is concerned about is the potential impact of current contract difficulties between Associated Universities, Inc. and the Brookhaven National Laboratory (AUI is the parent organization of both the NRAO and Brookhaven).
NRAO was encouraged to keep the 12 Meter running until the Millimeter Array (MMA) begins operation or there is general access for U.S. observers to an alternative large aperture single dish millimeter telescope.
NRAO was urged to continue operation of the 140 Foot, with more general observing in addition to the orbiting VLBI support that was planned, until the completion of the GBT.

Depending on proposal pressure and quality, it is NRAO's intention to grant more Large Proposal time than in past cycles, with as much as 25 percent to 50 percent of the total telescope time granted to Large Proposals over the next year and in the future.

 Millimeter-Wave Telescope Closes
The NRAO also operates the Very Large Array and Very Long Baseline Array from its facilities in New Mexico and is completing construction of the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia.
The NRAO is currently participating in an international partnership to develop the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA), an array of 64 antennas to observe at millimeter wavelengths from a 16,500-foot-high location in northern Chile.
Over the next few months, the NRAO will seek to transfer 12 Meter staff to the ALMA project or to other positions within the Observatory, where that is possible.

Headquartered in Charlottesville, VA, NRAO has offices and radio telescopes in four states, and is a partner in several international cooperative projects.
In summer 2001, as NRAO's Observatory Librarian, I approached the NRAO Director with recommendations gleaned from the newly-published AIP Study of Multi-Institutional Collaborations and urged development of an archival policy, with input from NRAO staff and from librarians and historians at other institutions.
NRAO has an addition to its headquarters building in Charlottesville under construction, with a targeted completion This new building will include a large, dedicated archives space. That space is certainly an indication of NRAO's commitment to developing and maintaining its archives.

 NVSS - NRAO VLA Sky Survey Catalog
The NVSS Catalog covers the sky north of the J2000.0 Declination of -40 degrees (82% of the celestial sphere) at 1.4 GHz.
The NVSS project at NRAO maintains an FTP archive of the (u,v) data and images from which the source catalog was constructed.
The large (4 degree X 4 degree) maps and their associated multisource (u,v) data sets are stored by NRAO as binary files in FITS format.

This was originally known as the 36-foot telescope, but a refurbishment not only went metric but increased the diameter slightly to a full 12 meters.
After going into operation in 1967, the telescope ceased operation by NRAO in the summer of 2000 (and is currently operating on a 6-month reprieve by a consortium of universities).

The second instrument at the entrance to NRAO is to your left as you enter.
It is the dish built by Grote Reber, who as an electrical engineer and amateur radio operator (W9GFZ, now the club call of the NRAO ARC, Socorro NM), built this dish in his backyard in Wheaton, IL in the 1930's to try and find Jansky's extraterrestrial noise.
The elevation mechanism is manual and obviously original but the azimuth mechanism is electrical and appears to be have been added when NRAO placed the dish at its current location.

The identification of superluminal expansion and the detection of NRAO 530 by EGRET further confirms the connection between superluminal blazars and gamma ray sources.
