CHU (radio station) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The CHU time signal, as well as the station's transmitted frequencies, are derived from atomic clocks.
CHU transmits 3 kW signals on 3330 and 14670 kHz, and a 10 kW signal on 7335 kHz.
The actual time signal is a series of 300 ms-long 1000 Hz tones, transmitted once per second, on the second.

Radio clock - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A radio clock is a clock that is synchronized by a time code bit stream transmitted by a radio transmitter connected to a time standard such as an atomic clock.
UK Broadcasts: a time signal from MSF, an atomic clock near Rugby (will be relocated to Anthorn on 2007-04-01) can be received on 60 kHz.
Loran-C time signals may also be used for radio clock synchronization, by augmenting their highly accurate frequency transmissions with external measurements of the offsets of LORAN navigation signals against time standards.

NRC scientists contributed some of the war’s most significant scientific advances including the development of ultrasonics for antisubmarine warfare, major improvements to aircraft detection by radar, the production of RDX (a new explosive more powerful than TNT), and the nuclear research that led to the development of atomic power.
About the same time, the NRC began developing gauges that would be used by the Apollo astronauts to measure gases in the moon’s atmosphere.
Capable of measuring time to within an accuracy of three parts within one hundred billion, this super clock is not used just for esoteric scientific experiments: it also enables Canadians to answer the question “What time is it?” as accurately as anyone in the world.

During the first day, the NRC in fact distanced itself from the company by stating it did not tell them how to run their plant and that they were overseers of regulatory matters.
The NRC acknowledged that 12 people are expected to die as a direct result of normal operation and releases for each commercial nuclear reactor that is granted a license extension of 20 years.
Although there was clear evidence of a leaking reactor, the NRC initially denied possession of the “smoking gun” — a picture of the red crud which had formed on the outside of the reactor vessel.

NRC also monitored the rates of a group of atomic clocks maintained by the Dominion Observatory, which was then responsible for official time in Canada.
The NRC time scale is also compared regularly with those of other countries through reception at the main time laboratory of the 100 kHz (100 kc/s) pulsed radio signals of the Loran-C navigation system.
Although CHU generates its own signal via a secondary cesium standard (installed in 1963), daily cross-comparisons are made with the main time laboratory to ensure that the station's frequency and time conform to the standards agreed upon internationally.

The NRC has openly acknowledged the 'path delay' problem for decades: "for all distant users of CHU, the dominant source of time error comes from the radio wave path reflecting off the ionosphere as the radio signal travels from the transmitter".
Time station CHU is operated by the Institute for National Measurement Standards at the National Research Council of Canada.

The nature of this signal is still not known, despite many decades of experimentation, although it was demonstrated to be transmitted through the phloem, a vascular system that connects the leaves to the growing parts of the plant.
Although FT itself may comprise a mobile signal, it remains possible that FT regulates the synthesis of other molecules in the phloem and that these represent the mobile signal.

Time, with focus on NTP and Slovenia
Even the non-demanding protocols (in the time sense) such as SMTP (mail transport) with their use of timeouts can easily be thrown off-balance when time is adjusted in large steps, unless special work-around techniques are carefully used, which is not a commonly encountered feature in todays programs.
As the time is an integral of frequency, the slope (first derivative) of the time offset error is proportional to the frequency offset.
Periodically checking for time offsets against some other NTP server will tell which is which: constantly rising (or falling) offsets, which are reset to zero from time to time is a telltale of seriously broken server.

 CHU Time synchronization for Linux
Once the start of the tone is found, its time of occurance relative to the system clock is recorded, as well as its absolute time measured by the system clock.
In order to find the time of occurance of the tone, the software counts the number of samples read by the sound card since being opened, and adds the time that takes to the recorded time the sound card was opened.
Because the time of the tone was measured against the sound card's clock, we can expect this will diverge from the system clock at some fixed rate.
