The NRDC Report does recognize that on December 16, 1998, EPA reduced the tap water MCL for TTHMs to 80 ppb from 100 ppb; however, this standard is not effective until December 16, 2001 at the earliest, and for small systems not until December 16, 2003 (Fed. Reg.
NRDC asserts that chemical-contaminant-testing requirements for bottled water are weaker than EPA standards for tap water because municipal water, but not bottled water, must be tested for sixteen unregulated contaminants.
Therefore, while the NRDC insists on reporting that two of the 103 brands of bottled water tested positive for coliform bacteria, this was true only of the first preliminary screening, and was not supported by at least three rounds of tests that followed, all conducted by state-certified, independent commercial labs.

Along with Washington PR firm Fenton Communications, NRDC bellowed that Alar, a ripening agent used on apples, "was the most potent-cancer causing agent in our food supply" and caused "as many as 5,300" cases of cancer in children.
The campaign declared that America's taste for swordfish "threaten[ed] the livelihood of the species." But the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service condemned the NRDC campaign as "flawed to the core," while the National Marine Fisheries Institute declared that swordfish were never in any danger of extinction.

On June 21, the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) held a news conference in Washington, DC, to announce the availability of a new NRDC report, "After Silent Spring," and a national coalition effort to reform pesticide law.
The three major goals of the coalition agenda are to improve the safety of the food supply, encourage the use of non-toxic agricultural alternatives to pesticides; and strengthen the nation's pesticide program by modernizing pesticide laws to better protect the public and environment.
