The purpose of this document is to describe the roles of the NSSDC, the WDCA RandS and the HEASARC in acquiring, archiving, and distributing high energy astrophysics data (primarily consisting of X-ray and Gamma-ray astronomy data).
NSSDC provides access to online information bases about NASA and non-NASA data at the NSSDC and elsewhere as well as the spacecraft and experiments that have or will provide public access data.
The NSSDC will hold this copy of the archive in a secure off-line environment, which will not be directly accessible by the outside community.

 King Receives 2004 Edward A. Flinn Award
He was instrumental in reviving the NSSDC with new and important collections of data as well as the essential new technology approaches to data and information systems.
To make such facilitation happen requires the ability of the NSSDC director to manage a staff of nearly seventy people; interact constantly with projects providing data; assure the data-seeking community is satisfied with products and services; and report progress to NASA management to assure the continued flow of funding.
King used the collocation of the NSSDC and the WDC to aid the efficiency of distribution of NSSDC data to the world community.

The National Space Science Data Center (NSSDC) has had the duty of data archiving and dissemination for the NASA missions for the past 25 years.

 Comet Space Missions
Rosetta (ESA): Originally scheduled for launch in January 2003, this spacecraft was to softland on comet 46P/Wirtanen in 2011 after one gravity assist flyby at Mars and two at Earth, and after passing by two asteroids (4979 Otawara and 140 Siwa).
New Horizons Pluto Kuiper Belt Flyby (Nasa): To be launched on January 9, 2006 by Atlas V 551 with Star 48B third stage, this spacecraft is to pass by Jupiter for gravity assist in February 2007, on the occasion of which the Jupiter system should be studied.
Launch was scheduled for April 19, 2003, arrival at comet Tempel 1 in 2005, sample return 2010.

NSSDC has also very recently ingested to NDADS 11-min resolution count rate data (charge state vs. energy) in ASCII from the U. Maryland charge state measurement investigation (PI: Ipavich; original PI: Gloeckler) for the 1991-1997 period.

Brown is the NSSDC principal astrophysics acquisition scientist.

USS Narwhal (SSN 671): Legislation signed on September 30, 2003 authorized the Secretary of the Navy to transfer NARWHAL to NSSDC.
There were two stipulations: (1) the nuclear reactor and propulsion equipment had to be removed (at the Navy's expense); (2) NSSDC had to submit an acceptable donation application.
The space aft of the RC will be open and used for displays, interactive exhibits, etc. Access from the barge deck will be via a ramp leading to a double door entranceway onto a quarterdeck welcoming area.

This data set consists of volume 2 of a two-volume set and contains a comparison (in Russian) of panoramas of the lunar surface taken from the soft-landers Luna 9 and Luna 13.
The book contains discussions on flight conditions, scientific apparatus (penetrometer and radiation densitometer), soil mechanics, results of scientific research, photogrammetric properties of the lunar panorama, locality of Luna 13, lunar relief, stereo studies of lunar rocks, morphological characteristics of the landing site, and topography.
This data set may be viewed at NSSDC, or may be obtained under special request as microfiche, which will be limited in quality for the photographs.
