NSU began as a knitting machine manufacturer, established in the town of Neckarsulm in 1884 as the Neckarsulmer Strickmaschinenfabrik (Neckarsulm Knitting Machine Factory).
NSU is primarily remembered today as the first licensee, and one of only three automobile companies, to produce cars for sale with Wankel engines.
The NSU Ro 80 was the second mass-produced two-rotor Wankel-powered vehicle.

The NSU Prinz was an automobile produced in Germany by the NSU Motorenwerke AG.
The first generation Prinz was available in a saloon body with an upright roof line and seating for four people.
When NSU was acquired by Volkswagen, the name was changed to Audi-NSU AG, and the small, rear-engined NSU models were quickly phased out, as they were far too competitive against Volkswagen's own Beetle.

The first was the Prinz 1000 later badged as the NSU 1000 with a 996 cc engine.Two high performance models followed, the TT and the TTS.
NSU's head engineer was against rotary engine development, but a year later Wankel and Froede persuaded the board to allow engine research if Wankel would share the patents and not receive any increase in consulting fees.
NSU aimed at the motoring enthusiast, against the likes of the Austin Healy Sprite etc, and in some respects the Spider was a continuation of their Wankel engine development programme.

At the turn of the 19th century, the small factory town of Neckarsulm, in southern Germany, was the home of a company that made automatic knitting machines as well as a successful line of "safety" bicycles (bicycles with two small wheels and a chain drive, as opposed to the "penny-farthing" big-wheeled types).
NSU started life in 1873 and became a huge presence throughout the 1900s, moving from the humble bicycle to motorcycle production and finally to cars.
With some of the most notable being the Sports Prinz and the Wankel Spider, Jim O'Sullivan is the proud owner of at least five NSU vehicles with the rotary engine Ro80 taking precedence on his busy front lawn.
