NSU Motorenwerke AG - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
NSU began as a knitting machine manufacturer, established in the town of Neckarsulm in 1884 as the Neckarsulmer Strickmaschinenfabrik (Neckarsulm Knitting Machine Factory).
NSU is primarily remembered today as the first licensee, and one of only three automobile companies, to produce cars for sale with Wankel engines.
The NSU Ro 80 was the second mass-produced two-rotor Wankel-powered vehicle, though it was known for its poor reliability.

The Ro 80 had 284 mm inboard disc brakes at the front and 272 mm discs at the rear, with dual-circuit hydraulics and separate drums for the handbrake.

NSU had moved on to produce small cars like the Prinz (the TT and TTS versions are still popular as vintage race cars), but then focussed on new rotary engines according to the ideas of Felix Wankel.
In 1967, the new NSU Ro 80 was a space age car well ahead of its time in technical details like aerodynamics, light weigth, safety etc., but teething problems with the rotary engines put an end to the independency of NSU.
In 1986, as the Audi 80 was beginning to develop a kind of "grandfather's car" image, the type 89 was introduced.

In 1954, NSU and Wankel had found each other, and the small German motorcycle firm started a collaboration which was to last for the entire life of all the firm's Wankel-related projects.
NSU then used the Prinz as the basis for a charming little Coupé, which went on the market in 1960.
The rotary engine of the Ro 80 was one of the many alternative forms of the internal-combustion engine which litter the history of the automobile industry.

largely unknown for building cars outside Europe, the Ro 80 was a unique car with a 115 bhp (86 kW), 995 cc twin-rotor Wankel engine driving the front wheels through a clutchless semi-automatic transmission.
NSU even planned to develop a 3 rotor motor but this plan was scrapped largely due to lack of funds.

NSU had been working together with Felix Wankel on a new engine concept since the beginning of the 1950s: instead of a reciprocating piston, a rotor compressed the fuel/air mixture (rotary piston engine).
The NSU caused a major sensation, but was unable to help the Wankel principle make the breakthrough hoped for.

The Volkswagen K70 (pronounced "ka siebzig") is a sedan automobile produced by both NSU and Volkswagen from 1969 to 1974.
The K70 was originally developed by NSU as a smaller brother to the more famous Ro 80, the main difference being that the K70 used a conventional piston engine instead of the Ro80's more complicated Wankel rotary engine.
In 1969, just as the car was about to be launched, NSU was taken over by Volkswagen, who integrated the Neckarsulm company with Auto-Union/Audi which it had acquired in 1964.
