  Privacy Code of Practice: Department of Housing - Privacy NSW : Lawlink NSW
The Department of Housing is required to investigate the truth or otherwise of the allegations concerning a particular tenant.
Where the Department of Housing holds personal information, it must not use the information without taking such steps as are reasonable in the circumstances to ensure that, having regard to the purpose for which the information is proposed to be used, the information is relevant, accurate, up to date, complete and not misleading.
The Department of Housing must not disclose personal information relating to an individual's ethnic or racial origin, political opinions, religious or philosophical beliefs, trade union membership, health or sexual activities unless the disclosure is necessary to prevent a serious or imminent threat to the life or health of the individual concerned or another person.

On 18 February 2004 the Department, announced, that SEPP 5 (the planning policy that previously dealt with housing for older people and people with a disability) was to be replaced by a new strategy, which focuses on balancing growing demand for accommodation with maintaining the character and feel of local neighbourhoods.

With the decline of the Commonwealth-State Housing Agreement, the value of the asset is being eroded by its failure to generate enough of a return in the way of income to meet the bill for even basic maintenance.

The NSW Department of Housing and the University of New South Wales have published a book and CD based on the results of a four-year study of the gardens at the Waterloo Public Housing Estate.
The gardens are one of the early initiatives of a partnership between the NSW Department of Housing and UNSW, which, for the past eight years, has run a Community Development Project at Waterloo and Redfern involving students and academics.

The largest landlord in Australia, the NSW Department of Housing, has announced its smokefree policy - after 18 months of consultation with peak tenant groups.
This policy should be brought to the attention of housing authorities in other states as a means of improving living conditions for all public housing tenants.

Mr Fraser says the Government is wrong to hold housing for prison inmates, when thousands of people on the north coast are waiting for public housing.
The NSW Department of Housing policy that covers the issue of holding tenancies for "jailbirds" can be found on the Department's website at: http://www.housing.nsw.gov.au/ under the title, "Absence from Dwelling".
The policy further states that the Department will consider each case on its merits, eg if the reason for imprisonment is related to a breach of the Tenancy Agreement the Department will commence action to terminate the tenancy.

A NSW Department of Housing employee solicited bribes of up to $8000 to "springboard" applications by disadvantaged people, a corruption inquiry heard yesterday.
In her opening statement, counsel assisting the commission, Frances Backman, said the inquiry would focus on Mr Klimoski, whose activities were "geared to receiving corrupt payments" for processing the applications.
Another $4000 was to be paid by the woman when she got the keys to her property, which she would pay $60 to $70 a week to rent, the commission heard.
