Teachers' working conditions had to be made flexible, the government insisted, in order for schools to become “competitive in the education market place”.
Some 25,000 teachers, students and parents rallied outside the NSW state parliament, mounting the largest education protest in more than a decade and demanding a complete withdrawal of the government's award.

NSW government school teachers will strike on Thursday and next Wednesday with their Catholic school counterparts walking out on Friday over the Carr government's intervention in the case for a pay increase before the NSW Industrial Relations Commission (IRC).
NSW Chamber of Commerce chief executive Margy Osmond said some employees would be forced to take leave during the strike to look after their children.
Teachers are seeking a 25 per cent rise over two years, but the Carr government has offered six per cent over the same period.

Federal Workplace Relations Minister Kevin Andrews said today it was inappropriate for the union to use students as postboxes to hand out the anti-Work Choices material.
Mr Andrews today told Federal Parliament the distribution of the pamphlet was a blatant example of NSW unions seeking to politicise the state's schools system.
"It's this sort of behaviour from the teachers' union in NSW which is part of the reason that the Prime Minister said this week that parents are increasingly voting with their feet and moving from the public schools system into the independent schools system,'' Mr Andrews said.

A day after the nation's biggest teachers strike, the NSW Teachers' Federation and state government put aside their differences to launch a program for refugee students.
The $20,000 a year program is funded equally by the government and the teachers' federation.
NSW Teachers' Federation deputy president Angelo Gavrielatos said teachers felt strongly about the 25 per cent payrise demand over which they protested on Wednesday, but the refugee issue was important enough to lay aside their differences with the government for one day.

The Teachers Federation commented: "Compelling research shows that children who have spent their first four years of school in small classes have better literacy and numeracy outcomes and achieve self-discipline earlier".
The recommendations of the Grimshaw report, many of which have been implemented already, include the establishment of a "quality assurance" system (which will be used by private schools to argue for increased funding), and the establishment of a private schools council, (which will in effect act as a lobby group for private education).
The Teachers Federation has welcomed the Government's decision to retain Marrickville and Dulwich Hill High Schools, but is under no illusions about the difficulties it faces in dealing with either of the two major parties as governments in NSW.

On October 26, members of the NSW Teachers Federation voted overwhelmingly to accept an offer from the state Labor government that will raise first-year teachers’ annual pay to at least $50,000 and teachers at the top end of the scale to at least $75,000.
The teachers’ current award does not expire until December 31, and in many past campaigns salary increases were not achieved until well after the expiry of the award.
Indeed, for the majority of NSW public school teachers, this is the first salary agreement to be reached without industrial action.
