RL1908 - Dan 'Laddo' Davies - Newcastle Rugby League history
Davies was aware of the NSWRL's requirement that all footballers must reside within their club's district, but the Glebe officials allayed his fears by saying that every club had one or two out-of-district players, and no one would make a fuss of it.
The NSWRL held their inquiry, which would have included statements from Annandale locals giving evidence of Davies' relatives residence and the toing and froing of the young man from the house.
The outcome was that the NSWRL disqualified every club official in the Newcastle area, except those from Easts who remained aloof from the drama.

Any request to the NSWRL could only be made through the North Sydney club, who had no obligation to pass the matter on, however despite the impact this might have on the North Sydney club, they weren't really obstructive of Manly's objectives.
Unfortunately NSWRL were not satisfied as to the district's ability to sustain a team and opted to reduce its competition back to a symmetrical eight teams and thus eliminate the previous weekly bye.
The NSWRL accepted Manly's application and, along with Parramatta, they were granted admission to the 1947 competition.

Penrith Panthers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Based in Penrith, New South Wales, 60km west of the centre of Sydney and at the foot of the Blue Mountains, the Panthers were in 1967 admitted to the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) competition, predecessor of the Australian Rugby League (ARL) and the current NRL competition.
Varied Penrith teams had played for many years between 1912 and 1966 in the Western Districts League under the control of the Western Suburbs RLFC, in the Parramatta competition after Parramatta was admitted to the NSWRL in 1947, and also in a second-tier Sydney competition introduced by the NSWRL in 1962.
Penrith's uniform colours in the 1966 NSWRL Second Division and earlier years were blue and white but due to the Cronulla-Sutherland side registering a predominantly blue jersey design first, and with Newtown, Canterbury, Eastern Suburbs and Parramatta also displaying various shades of blue, Penrith went in search of an alternative.

ESSAYS ON RUGBY LEAGUE : by TERRACESIDER
Some time in the middle of the 1909 season, the NSWRL persuaded James Joynton Smith, a Sydney entrepreneur, to underwrite the cost of a three match Wallabies v Kangaroos series to be played under Rugby League rules, over seven days.
The gate that afternoon was a disappointing 4,000 but it was enough to enable the NSWRL to meet their financial obligations to Joynton Smith and survive into another, uncertain season.
Typical premiership gates rose inexorably from the nadir of 1909 to 2, 000 in 1910, 3,000 in 1911 and 4,750 in 1912.

In 1907, at the instigation of the famous test cricket player Victor Trumper, at a meeting in Bateman's Crystal Hotel in Sydney, New South Wales, The NSW Rugby League was formed.
Players were immediately recruited for the new game, and despite the threat of immediate and lifetime expulsion from the rugby union, the NSWRL managed to recruit Herbert "Dally" Messenger, the most famous rugby player in Sydney at that time.
In 1908 when the Australian Rugby Union team returned from a tour of the British Isles, for which the team had received three shillings a day for "out-of-pocket" expenses, 13 of the players immediately joined rugby league teams.

RL1908 - Balmain Tigers Rugby League
By the start of the 1909 season, the NSWRL was in a dire financial crisis - its founding fathers, James Giltinan, Victor Trumper and 'Harry' Hoyle, all lost their positions.
Balmain lobbied the NSWRL to schedule the Final at Wentworth Park, which was half-way between the two districts.
With the NSWRL bankrupted, Balmain and Norths officials would lead the formation of a new rugby league body - one in which they, and not South Sydney and Easts, would be the dominant office-holders.

That prompted NSWRL chief Geoff Carr to confirm that a second voice was present on the tape, after yesterday denying that anyone other than Gasnier was involved.
