NTFS has several improvements over FAT such as improved support for metadata and the use of advanced data structures to improve performance, reliability and disk space utilization plus additional extensions such as security access control lists and file system journaling.
NTFS has five versions: v1.0, v1.1 and v1.2 found in NT 3.51 and NT 4, v3.0 found in Windows 2000 and v3.1 found in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003.
Due to the complexity of the internal NTFS structures, both the built-in 2.6.14 kernel driver and the FUSE driver will stop writing to the volume when it detects too many changes to be safe, thus it should not corrupt the volume.

In computing, a NTFS junction point (JP) is a type of NTFS reparse point in the NTFS file system.
It requires a NTFS 5.0 file system, which can be created (or converted from a FAT partition) under Windows 2000 and Windows XP.
Note: junction points link to folders only, if you want to create a similar link with files, use hard links.

 NTFS Reparse Points
Junction Points: A junction point is similar to a symbolic link, but instead of redirecting access from one file to another, it redirects access from one directory to another.
Volume Mount Points: A volume mount point is like a symbolic link or junction point, but taken to the next level: it is used to create dynamic access to entire disk volumes.
For example, you can create volume mount points for removable hard disks or other storage media, or even use this feature to allow several different partitions (C:, D:, E: and so on) to appear to the user as if they were all in one logical volume.

Junction points, on the other hand, allow for configuring one directory to point to a second directory, on any volume on the same machine.

Junction points (JP), transparent to users and programs, can be acted upon in exactly the same way as normal files and directories and so are a useful way of lifting directories that are deep in a directory tree to a more convenient depth without disturbing the original tree’s structure or contents.
Junctions points are based on an NTFS mechanism called reparse points.
By using junction points it is possible to graft a target folder onto another NTFS folder or mount a volume onto a NTFS junction point.

NTFS v1.1 is the filesystem of the system Windows NT®, and is also described as NTFS v4.0.
This shortcoming was spearheaded with the release of NTFS 5.0, introducing flexibility in determining how much access you want to assign to whom: control now exists with how security changes are or are not propagated down a filesystem.
DFS on the other hand comes in to play when you want to expand this functionality past one machine, allowing the junctioning of multiple directories from multiple machines to one single directory, or share most likely.

Monday, October 31, 2005 11:09 AM by Chris K. That is one thing that always bugged me about reparse points in NTFS, their inability to refer to network shares.
The reparse point mechanism is, I believe, sufficiently general that one could write a simplistic symlink reparse point without much trouble at all.
I'd think all you really need for symlinks is a generalization of junction points ("generalized" to allow them to point anywhere in the object manager namespace, and to allow them to be attached to files as well as directories).
