Non-Uniform Memory Access - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
NUMA architectures are the logical next step in scaling from Symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) architectures.
NUMA attempts to address this problem by providing separate memory for each processor, avoiding the performance hit when several processors attempt to address the same memory.
NUMA can be viewed as a very tightly coupled form of cluster computing.

The Internet Classics Archive | Numa Pompilius by Plutarch
Numa was about forty years of age when the ambassadors came to make him offers of the kingdom; the speakers were Proculus and Velesus, one or other of whom it had been thought the people would elect as their new king; the original Romans being for Proculus, and the Sabines for Velesus.
The statutes prescribed by Numa for the vestals were these: that they should take a vow of virginity for the space of thirty years, the first ten of which they were to spend in learning their duties, the second ten in performing them, and the remaining ten in teaching and instructing others.
Numa displayed the target to the artificers and bade them show their skill in making others like it; all despaired, until at length one Mamurius Veturius, an excellent workman, happily hit upon it, and made all so exactly the same that Numa himself was at a loss and could not distinguish.

Numa Numa - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Numa Numa is an Internet meme based on the Moldovan Romanian pop song "Dragostea Din Tei" by O-Zone.
Gary Brolsma first published his "Numa Numa Dance" on December 12, 2004.
This style is in keeping with the original "Numa Numa" video, in which someone super-imposed several pictures onto his dance routine, among them pictures of "feta cheese" during lyrics that would sound like such to an American listener and a LEGO representation of Bob Ross during the singer's words: "sunt eu Picasso" ("it's me, Picasso").

 LWN: The new NUMA scheduler
NUMA (non-uniform memory access) systems, of course, are distinguished by an architecture which makes some memory "closer" to certain processors than others.
More recently, the NUMA scheduler patch has been reworked (by Martin Bligh, Erich Focht, Michael Hohnbaum, and others) around a simple observation: most of the NUMA problems can be solved by simply restricting the current scheduler's balancing code to processors within a single node.
Treating hyperthreaded systems as NUMA systems has a a certain conceptual elegance, but it may not be the way the Linux kernel goes in the end.

DevChannel | NUMA: Theory and practice
NUMA takes cache's basic concept of memory locality and expands on it so that multiprocessor systems can make effective use of not just their local memory but also of memory on different buses, and even memory connected to the processor over a fast network.
NUMA machines, however, use multiple buses to handle memory, thus making it much harder to slow a system down by throwing too much data at it.
NUMA support is now arriving in server operating systems like Microsoft's Windows 2003 Server and in Linux distributions based on the forthcoming 2.6 kernel.

IBM Redbooks | Introduction to NUMA on xSeries Servers
NUMA effectively means that every processor or every group of processors has a certain amount of memory local to it.
The essence of the NUMA architecture is the existence of multiple memory subsystems, as opposed to a single one on a SMP system.
The 2.6 kernel features NUMA awareness in the scheduler (the part of the operating system that assigns system resources to processes), so that the vast majority of processes execute in “local” memory.

In addition to items that have been incorported into the 2.5 Linux kernel, there are NUMA features that have been developed that continue to be supported as patchsets.
On NUMA systems, optimal performance is obtained by locating processes as close to the memory they access as possible.
NUMA awareness within the scheduler is necessary in order to support locality of processes to memory - primarily by dispatching a process on the same node through the duration of the procesess' life.

Can NUMA hit the server big time?
NUMA proponents claim the technology is an improvement over traditional Intel-based SMP systems that can suffer from traffic jams on their shared-memory buses and typically cannot accommodate more than 16 or 32 processors.

Application Software Considerations for NUMA-Based Systems
The higher the NUMA ratio value—that is, the greater the disparity between the time it takes to access far memory as compared to near memory—the greater the effect that NUMA characteristics may have on software performance.
Note: On a NUMA system that is divided into several hardware partitions—that is, where an instance of the operating system is running on each partition—the SRAT table passed by the firmware describes the hardware resources owned by the particular partition on which the operating system image is running.
For applications that are single-threaded, the kernel NUMA features ensure that, wherever possible, all memory requested by the application is allocated in the same node as the requesting processor.
