  NationMaster - Encyclopedia: NVRAM
NVRAM is a subgroup of the more general class of non-volatile memory types, the difference being that NVRAM devices offer random access, as opposed to sequential access like hard disks.
A huge advance in NVRAM technology was the introduction of the floating-gate transistor, which led to the introduction of erasable programmable read-only memory, or EPROM.
Here's a way to modify NVRAM IDPROM info on a Sun 3/80 (people have to do this because of the usual battery problem, as with the sun4c machines) This may not be the most elegant procedure, but this should allow you to modify the NVRAM IDPROM info on a sun 3/80.

 SUN NVRAM/hostid FAQ
Usually, when the NVRAM gets corrupted in this way, this is a symptom that the battery embedded in the NVRAM chip has run out and you need to replace the chip.
The ethernet address in NVRAM is the default address for all ethernet interfaces.
The NVRAM chips are SGS-Thomson Timekeeper (formerly Mostek) chips.

How to Clear NVRAM   (Site not responding. Last check: )
NVRAM can occasionally become corrupt and resetting it back to factory default settings can be a first step in troubleshooting.
NOTE: The NVRAM switch in the up position clears the memory, but will not hold the configuration after the power is cycled.
Return the NVRAM switch to the down position (failure to return the switch to the down position will cause the unit to return to factory defaults each time the STHI is rebooted).

Resetting the NVRAM (when Stop-N doesn't do it) You might want to do this to recover from the loss of an NVRAM password (in full security mode) or if you mess up your nvramrc.
Replacing the NVRAM chip is a relatively simple matter, the only trick is to set the appropriate values in the Sun PROM monitor using the q command then boot the operating system to kick-start the clock.
Once it is programmed, you can copy it's contents to the NVRAM's on the I/0 boards by using the command: copy-clock-tod-to-io-boards You can also program a blank or corrupt NVRAM on a board by copying a valid copy from another board.

 Fixing a Sun NVRAM chip
So fix your NVRAM using this guide only if you have soldering skills and are not faint of heart.
You'll need the NVRAM with the empty battery, two 1.5Volt batteries (even used ones are okay), a soldering iron, some wire, a saw or Dremel tool and a knife.
When taking out the NVRAM, carefully note on which side the dot is! The NVRAM should be reinserted the same way it came out.

 Sun 3/80 NVRAM
The Sun 3/80 was the first Sun which used a NVRAM instead of an EEPROM (to store the settings which can be viewed and changed by the "eeprom" command) and a PROM (machine type, serial number and ethernet address) to store the hardware settings.
The NVRAM is sitting on the mainboard in the left rear corner.

One important enhancement to eXtremeDB 3.0 is improved task scheduling, which employs a fast new synchronization mechanism that minimizes expensive context switches, while using fewer CPU cycles to resolve resource contention.
NVRAM is memory that is backed up by a battery so even if a device is turned off or loses its power source, the content of the memory remains.

 NVRAM
I'm confused, just what is NVRAM, I googled it and got all kinds of answers mostly talking about Sun products and routers, the sys does continue to boot but runs very sluggishly..
NVRAM is memory on a chip that is supposed to retain its information after the system has been powered down, and receives its small amount of power needed to keep it from the CMOS battery installed in your motherboard.
Since the BIOS relies on the settings stored in NVRAM in order to best handle the particular hardware you have, performance may not be optimized for stability and performance any longer.

What is NVRAM? - A Word Definition From the Webopedia Computer Dictionary
One type of NVRAM is SRAM that is made non-volatile by connecting it to a constant power source such as a battery.
Another type of NVRAM uses EEPROM chips to save its contents when power is turned off.
In this case, NVRAM is composed of a combination of SRAM and EEPROM chips.

NVRAM stands for non-volatile RAM and it is a section of memory that retains its contents even after power is lost.
It can be implemented in a variety of ways -- it can be battery-backed RAM memory (like on PCs), or a EEPROM memory (Electronically Erasable Programable Read-Only Memory; typically low-density memory chips), or it can even be the FLASH memory used in memory cards.
NVRAM can store a variety of small items of information.
