The supported cards are documented in NVIDIA's README by NVIDIA chip name and Device PCI ID. If you don't know these information for your card and don't know how to obtain them, you may run this script to determine if your card is supported by the current drivers.
It is consequently possible that a version of the NVIDIA 3D drivers working with the Linux 2.6 minor version already in Debian enters unstable and testing, and then that a new minor version of Linux 2.6, incompatible with the version of the NVIDIA 3D drivers in Debian, enters Debian.

Users planning to install the officially distributed version of the beta nVidia drivers should be advised that X.org may fail to start upon upgrading the kernel as modules are built for specific kernel configurations.
After the installation of the official nVidia package, it is possible (though perhaps unlikely) that X11 will refuse due its attempt to utilize the older version of the nVidia kernel module.

NVIDIA - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ: NVDA) is a major supplier of graphics processors (graphics processing units, GPUs), graphics cards, and media and communications devices for PCs and game consoles such as the original Xbox and the new upcoming 'next generation' PlayStation 3.
NVIDIA purchased 3dfx primarily for the intellectual property which was in dispute at the time, but also acquired anti-aliasing expertise, and about 100 engineers, who subsequently worked extensively on development of the ill fated FX series, to some minds proving 3dfx lacked the expertise to develop high performance integrated cores.
NVIDIA's fightback began with the GeForce 6 series, which addressed the key issues that had plagued the FX series, namely shader performance and power consumption.

NVIDIA has been the darling of Wall Street for quite some time, and their business practices have certainly reflected this.
Competing products from NVIDIA include the GeForce FX 5600 series, which is still based on the NV30 technology, and as such has very poor PS 2.0 performance in many of the latest games and applications.
The competition for this part from NVIDIA was the GeForce FX 5900 Ultra and GeForce FX 5950, and both of those cards could not touch the overall speed and competence of the X800 series of cards.
