The annual NWR Woman of the Year Mary Stott Award is instituted in memory of one of NWR's founders, the editor of the Guardian Women's page in the 1950s and 60s.
The second presentation of the Mary Stott NWR Woman of the Year goes to Margaret Lavelle, Area Organiser for the South West Region and member of the Kingsbridge and District group.

 NOAA Weather Radio
Known as the "Voice of NOAA's National Weather Service," NWR is provided as a public service by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), part of the Department of Commerce.
NWR includes more than 940 transmitters, covering all 50 states, adjacent coastal waters, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the U.S. Pacific Territories.
NWR requires a special radio receiver or scanner capable of picking up the signal.

 Chassahowitzka River and NWR - Central Florida Kayak Trips
Located 60 miles north of Tampa and St. Petersburg on the gulf coast of Florida, the 31,000+ acre refuge was created in 1943 as a winter preserve for migratory waterfowl.
The northern boundary of the NWR parallels the Homosassa River, with the southern end 12 miles south at Raccoon Point.
Immediately adjacent to the NWR entrance signage is a private boat dock.

 Friends of Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge.
Eighteen additional whooping cranes are being raised at Necedah NWR this summer and trained to follow the ultra-light aircraft this fall to Chassahowitzka NWR.
Chassahowitzka NWR was selected as the wintering site for the whooping cranes after surveying sites all the way around the Gulf of Mexico from Louisiana and up to the Atlantic coast to the Carolinas.
Chassahowitzka is far enough from the Aransas NWR whooping crane population to insure the two populations remain separate.

 Emergency Managers NWR Notebook
NWR is one of several information and warning services that make up the Florida Warning and Information Network.
Through a 1975 White House policy statement, NWR became the sole government-operated radio system to provide natural and manmade disaster warnings directly to private homes.
Older (non-SAME) NWR receivers without the SAME capability would alert for emergencies anywhere within the coverage area of the NWR transmitter, typically several counties, even though the emergency could be well away from the listener.

 GORP -Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge
Located within the northernmost part of the legendary Florida Everglades, Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee NWR is the only surviving remnant of the northern Everglades.
The 146,000-acre refuge consists mostly of the sawgrass marsh that is so characteristic of the Everglades environment and is one of the few places where lucky observers might see the endangered snail kite searching for food.
The future looks brighter for the refuge, but Flock says they are still trying to do more with less, a reflection of the staff and financial resource shortages faced by refuges throughout the system.

Assabet River NWR was established in 2000 when the U.S. Army transferred 2,230 acres to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to be part of the National Wildlife Refuge System.
Members of The Friends of Assabet River NWR will also be present to talk with visitors about the refuge and the Friends group between the hours of 10:00 a.m.
The Friends of Assabet River NWR have worked alongside Service staff in the establishment and preparation of the refuge for use by the public.

The Ridgefield NWR is located on the Columbia River floodplain adjacent to Ridgefield, Washington and provides 4,615 acreas of vital migration and wintering habitat for Pacific Flyway waterfowl.
A portion of the refuge can be viewed from Lower River Road along the Columbia River near Vancouver Lake and is discussed in the Vancouver Lake Area Guide.
Ridgefield NWR can be reached from I-5 by taking the Ridgefield exit and traveling 269th St. west as it turns into Pioneer Ave.

 America's National Wildlife Refuge System
We also propose to expand hunting and fishing opportunities at six other refuges and correct the public record to clarify that hunting programs are open at four refuges in Montana (Black Coulee, Creedman Coulee, Hewitt Lake and Lake Thibadeau).
The rule also notes that Holt Collier NWR in Mississippi was formerly part of the Yazoo Refuge Complex, where hunting has been permitted.
The new fishing program is proposed for Cape May NWR in New Jersey where previously only hunting has been allowed.

 DHS alerts from NWR
If the DHS becomes aware of a threat in a particular state or area of the country, after coordination with authorities in each involved state, the DHS will issue an alert to all NWS offices via a link in the Washington, DC, area.
Even though the alerts are first broadcast on NWR, they are originated by civil authorities and thus will not carry the WXR (National Weather Service) Originator Code.
As of June 30, 2004, all the new EAS Event codes were approved for use on NWR.

 TCP/IP FTP Questions & Answers
When I use my AS/400 as the FTP client to transmit files to the OS/390 host, I always end up with the default prefix being used in the dataset name created.
For example, if I logon to the NWR server with user ID "IIXXX" and on the command line enter PUT as/400-file 'nwr.dataset.name' a dataset named "II.XXX.NWR.DATASET.NAME" is created at NWR even though single quotes are used in the PUT command.
On the WS_FTP client configuration, make sure that the NWR site has been identified as an IBM MVS host, and not a Unix host.
