A Historical Introduction to the New Testament
These gospels exist today only in fragments from which it is hard to draw definite conclusions.
The theology of Thomas is remarkably similar to that of the Naassenes (cf.
Perhaps around 125, Papias knew some written gospels but stated his preference for oral traditions; by 150, Justin at Rome reflects a situation where written gospels have superseded most of the oral tradition; but even later at Alexandria oral traditions were still prominent, though tending to be confined to Gnostic groups.

However laudable and understandable it was back then, it clung to a church that outlived the Gnostics, outlived Greek philosophy, and outlived the concept of gods being represented in varied forms to express incarnations of their various attributes.

They analyse the text of 0212 as compared to the text of the Diatessaron and find that they disagree on many points: "We confess to having felt some surprise when five out of the eight items on which a conclusion could be reached proved to be non-Tatianic.
The bulk of evidence is strongly against the fragment's being a part of Tatian's Diatessaron." (op.

 The Hymn of Jesus
Nearly the whole of this lengthy fragment consists of a monologue put into the mouth of John, and in it we have preserved to us a very remarkable tradition of the Gnostic side of the life of the Master; or, if it be preferred, of incidents in the "occult" life of Jesus.
To me it seems almost certain, as I argued in the first edition of Fragments of a Faith Forgotten, in 1900, that this Hymn is no hymn, but a mystery-ritual and perhaps the earliest Christian ritual of which we have any trace.
If, then, I venture on any suggestions of meaning, it should be understood that they are but tentative and ephemeral, and as it were only rough notes in pencil in the margin that may be rubbed out and emended by every one according to his knowledge and preference.

 The Apocrypha
The major character which the works now termed apocryphal have in common is that Christians were warned away from these writings and many of these texts were vigorously suppressed, destroyed or survive today only as fragments.
In the process of determining the Biblical canon, a large number of works were excluded from the New Testament.
In addition to the known Apocryphal works, there are also small fragments of texts, parts of unknown, or uncertain, works.

The earliest physical fragment of a Gospel is a hand-sized piece of papyrus called P52 (also the John Rylands fragment), dated 100-150 CE (sometimes given as c.125 or 120-130, though some authorities suggest 100-125), and which contains about 7 verses probably (but not certainly) from Gos.John.

Theurgic and Ritual writings were a common religious expression of the masses, the Egyptian Greek and Roman world of this period show many inscriptions and fragments of magic of a very eclectic syncretism based loosely on relevant events from myths or legends.

Jesus of Nazareth 2 - Crystalinks
Many apocryphal texts have also surfaced detailing events in Jesus' life and teachings, chief among them the Gospel of Thomas, a "sayings gospel" or logia consisting primarily of phrases attributed to Jesus.
Other New Testament apocrypha, generally considered less important, include the Gospel of the Hebrews, the Gospel of Mary Magdalene, the Infancy Gospels, the Gospel of Peter, the Unknown Berlin Gospel, the Naassene Fragment, the Secret Gospel of Mark, the Egerton Gospel, the Oxyrhynchus Gospels and the Fayyum Fragment.
A number of Christian traditions (such as Veronica's veil and the Assumption of Mary) are found not in the canonical gospels, but in these and other apocryphal works, such as the Acts of Pilate.

As you are generous enough to agree, the details of Gospel composition are much murkier (and I think the earliest surviving fragment is still Papyrus 52, which dates from 125-50).
But I don't think this is some sort of contest, since these details of composition and sources really don't affect my central claim that believing the Qur'an is the Word of God is, like the Jesus resurrection story, a dogma - ie a belief held without evidence (compared with say heliocentrism or common biological descent).

Modern textual criticism of the surviving early manuscripts of the Bible has highlighted several passages that are suspected to be later interpolations, such as the Comma Johanneum (first noticed by Isaac Newton) and Pericope Adulterae, as well as more important passages that were not originally present, like Mark 16.
Fragmentary survivals such as the Secret Gospel of Mark, Gospel of the Hebrews, the Unknown Berlin Gospel, the Naassene Fragment, the Egerton Gospel, the Oxyrhynchus Gospels, and the Fayyum Fragment, have suggested that some aspects of the original canonical gospels have been re-written over time, supressed, and otherwise altered, sometimes in theologically significant ways.
Many scholars, such as Michael Grant, do not see significant similarity between the pagan myths and Christianity.
