Minds in the Making | History | The Temples of Petra
With such a wide range of temples available for study in Nabataea, it is not surprising that the task of designating a certain influence or basis for the plan of each is a daunting one.
Nabataea was a free state until Trajan's annexation; therefore, the early art and architecture do not conform to conventions put in place by a Roman ruler.
Despite the growing Roman influence over Nabataea or, depending on which date is correct for the construction of the two temples, after the empire had taken control, Dharih and Tannur did not utilize classical ideas in sculpture and decoration.

The earliest occupation layers excavated during the Roman Aqaba Project (1994-2002) in the city of Aqaba, Jordan are represented by three phases of substantial Nabataean stone- and mud-brick wall construction, built upon beach sands sterile of artifacts.
The collapse dents the surfaces beneath, indicating a violent fall of the structures.
Excavators concluded that this collapse horizon could either relate to the Roman annexation of Nabataea in A.D. 106 or a possible earthquake at the beginning of the second century.

Nabataea was first mentioned by the historian Diodorus in 312 B.C. The early Nabataeans forsook all building and agriculture because those who possess these things, in order to retain them, are easily compelled by the powerful to do their bidding.
Nabataea was wealthy from incense trade and apparently paid tribute to keep independent rule.
One of the latest known Nabataean inscriptions, from 191 A.D., records "…This in the year 85 of the Eparchy [Roman Rule], in whi[ch] A[rabs] destroyed the land." It seems likely that raiding Arab tribes extinguished what remained of a weakened Nabataean culture.

As I mentioned in the opening paragraph, one of the issues that have often puzzled Middle Eastern historians is the proper use of the word 'Arab.' To the uneducated outsider, Arabs are the people who live in the deserts of the Middle East.
Next is the Aelanitic Gulf [modern Gulf of Aqaba] and Nabataea, a country well-peopled, and abounding in cattle.
The islands which lie near [modern Jazirat Tiran and Jazirat Sanafir], and opposite, are inhabited by people who formerly lived without molesting others, but latterly carried on a piratical warfare in raftsagainst vessels on their way from Egypt.
