 NationMaster - Encyclopedia: Nabla operator
Vector field given by vectors of the form (-y, x) In mathematics a vector field is a construction in vector calculus which associates a vector to every point in Euclidean space.
The name of this symbol is the nabla, after a Hebrew stringed instrument with a similar shape, and so the operator is also called the nabla operator.
The symbol was introduced by William Rowan Hamilton, and is sometimes called nabla, after the ancient Hebrew instrument which the shape resembles.

 Backreaction: Nabla
The nabla symbol is used in maths (and physics of course) to denote a differential operator.
It's funny that Maxwell defines the use of nabla in the "Preliminary" section at the beginning of his two volume Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism (3rd ed., 1873), for "convergence" and "curl" operators, and in fact in the rest of the never uses them for his electromagnetic equations.
The correct etymology of nabla is that it is a short form of Czech "na blastním vrcholu stojící trojúhelník" which translates as "a triangle standing on its own bertex".

More than three decades ago Richard Montague presented a formal description of the syntax and semantics of a fragment of English that included verbs, nouns, negation, coordination and quantification as well as propositional attitudes like assertion, knowledge and belief.
The intensional logic is a special higher order logic with a typed lambda calculus that makes a treatment of the propositional attitudes possible.
Based on recent work on generalized categorial grammar and type logic we present a linguistic system called Nabla which uses lexical and logical combinators in a linguistic theory that covers about the same fragment as Montague grammar, but without any rules and without the intensional logic.

The derivative $\nabla _{v}w$ is defined as identical to $D_{v}w$ except that $v$ is not regarded as a tensor argument.
Thus, the expression $\nabla _{u}\nabla _{v}w$ is simply the derivative of the vector field $\nabla _{v}w$.
\ For a function $f$, that means \begin{eqnarray*} \nabla _{u}\nabla _{fv}w &=&\nabla _{u}\left(\nabla _{fv}w\right) \\ &=&\nabla _{u}\left(f\nabla _{v}w\right) \\ &=&\left(\nabla _{u}f\right) w+f\nabla _{u}\left(\nabla _{v}w\right) \end{eqnarray*}% so this expression is \emph{not} tensorial in $v$.

V being a scalar field and F a vector field, it's a very handy notation (it's not a vector, but it transforms as a vector, so it can be used like one, somehow).
You will find a very good discussion of it in a "Feynman's lecture on physics" of tome II (at the start, may be the second or third chapter).
