		Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich (To Thee, Lord, I Lift my Soul) is a cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach.
		Although the exact date is not known, it may date from Bach's late years employed in Arnstadt (where he was up to 1707) or his early years in Weimar (from 1708).
		The piece is written for soprano, alto, tenor and bass soloists, a choir and an orchestra consisting of bassoon, violins and basso continuo.

		Sequences of falling fifths return at the end of the closing chromatic fugue in association with the words “über mich.” From these details we understand the idea of descent—whether in the form of the chromatic tetrachord or the circle of fifths—as the expression of a life of adversity.
		In particular, the differentiation between the nature of human existence on the one hand, and the life toward which faith and hope are directed on the other, runs through much of Bach’s work and, beginning with the Weimar cantatas of 1714, is represented quite often by tonal planning.

		Cantata 150 "Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich" ("To You, Lord, I lift up my soul"): A penitential cantata, one of the monuments of the series, and probably the oldest Bach cantata extant.
		Against the soloists, the choral sopranos enter with the chorale "Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ" (I call to you, Lord Jesus Christ"), a phrase at a time, also in triple meter.
		The final chorale "Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ" presents the chorale tune whole, rather than, as in the opening duet, in fragments.

		As a new member of the Choral Society myself, I wanted to observe Dr. Zielinski on stage to catch a glimpse of what to expect later this year.
		The program began with the University Singers performing J.S. Bach's cantata 150, Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich ("For thee, Lord, is my desire"), accompanied by Brenda Cates on the organ.
		The balance was good among the voice parts, and the blending of the soloists in the trio movement was especially impressive.

		If there was one weakness to the performance, and the performance of Christ lag in Todesbanden, BWV 4 later in the program, it was that the soloists, all drawn from the choir, were seldom more than satisfactory and occasionally a bit less.
