Other teachings of his are epitomized in his famous adage: "It is a great mitzvah (divine commandment) to always be happy!" On the other hand, many of the statements attributed to him depict a deeply troubled man, causing some scholars to suggest that he was manic-depressive and subject to sharp mood swings.
Some scholars have speculated that this fear was sparked by repressed homosexuality, citing his close relationship with Nathan of Breslav.
While most people consider this to be a joke, a tiny, extreme group of followers has adopted this as a mantra, producing stickers with it and even painting it as enormous graffiti in public places throughout Israel.

Rav Nachman states that when such an extraordinary individual does arise and confronts such an extraordinary situa- tion, he has immense power to subdue evil and to awaken to repentance those who have been caught in its grip.
Rav Nachman calls this a "voice" or a "song" which awakens the dormant good in wrongdoers and gives them a beautiful fragrance that nullifies the stench of sin.
Rav Nachman refers here, as he often does, to a "single, double, triple and quadruple song"; he explains that these four levels refer to different levels of Divine providence.

Rabbi Nachman of Breslov said, "People put all the emphasis on the means through which healing comes about - the medicine - as if without medicine God does not have the power to heal.

Rav Nachman of Breslav says: "Even someone who seems (God forbid) to be completely wicked, we have to seek in him a little bit of goodness, one aspect of his being in which he is not wicked.
Indeed, for this reason the Rema writes that a doubtful transgression is more serious than a certain one; since a person is not convinced that he acted improperly, he is unlikely to repent adequately (Orach Chaim 603:1).
The simple "psychological" understanding of Rav Nachman's words is that a person has no incentive to repent if he is convinced that he has a wicked nature.
