Nacirema - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Body Ritual Among the Nacirema is a satire of anthropological papers on other cultures, and the culture of the United States.
Nacirema is actually a word play, as it is "American" spelled backwards.
The Nacirema are described as a group living in the territory between the Canadian Cree, the Yaqui and Tarahumare of Mexico, and the Carib and Arawak of the Antilles.

Discussion of the rite is considered taboo by most Nacirema and is rarely mentioned in their culture except to remind themselves of the benefits of the rite and the dangers of not having it done.
The Nacirema believe that all females are born perfect by design while males are born flawed with part of their bodies 'unclean' that must be amputated in order to maintain good health.
For a Nacirema mother if she doesn't want the ritual performed on her baby, it would be as if she were rejecting her father, brothers, and even her own husband, all of whom have gone through the rite and consider it important to continue the tradition.

Religious Basis for Nacirema Body Ritual
The Nacirema are a diverse people, with settlers from different parts of the continent and the world blending together to form a distinct culture.
Miner cites the oral rites of the Nacirema as examples of their magic beliefs but we can see the link between what, according to Miner, is the belief "...that a strong relationship exists between oral and moral characteristics" and religious belief by looking again to the creation myth.
Perhaps all that is needed is for the Nacirema to acknowledge that religion, whatever the denomination, affects their culture, and to recognize that is not necessarily a bad thing, to enable them to address the problems of alienation and loss of cultural identity.

While the natives are very vague on this point, we can only assume that the idea in retaining all the old magical materials is that their presence in the charm-box, before which the body rituals are conducted, will in some way protect the worshiper.

According to the Nacirema tribal mythology, their nation was originated by a culture hero, Geowahs, from whom all claim to be descended.
An important part of this ritual consists of thrusting into the mouth a magical wand tipped with boar's bristles, natural or artificial, and moving it in a series of mystical movements which are thought to dispel the influence of evil spirits and prevent their entering the body through the mouth.
The Nacirema people have an almost pathological horror of and fascination with the mouth, the condition of which is believed to have a supernatural influence upon all social and societal relationships.

The anthropological article, “Body Rituals Among the Nacirema” written by Horace Miner, discusses a foreign tribe’s culture, which in the end is not foreign at all.
Nacirema is American spelled backwards as a hint from Miner that he is indeed speaking of the rituals practiced by Americans.
The words chosen by Miner give the effect that Naciremas are more spiritual and are not based as much on science as America is. The term witch doctor gives the vibe that it is African and a voodoo worshiping quality.
