  The University of the Arts Libraries: Nadia Chilkovsky Nahumck, 1908-2006
Nahumck's Philadelphia Dance Academy was absorbed by the Philadelphia College of the Performing Arts in 1977 and continues today as The University of the Arts (UArts) School of Dance.
Nahumck founded the Philadelphia Dance Academy in 1944, organized a college division in 1954 with the Philadelphia Musical Academy (now The University of the Arts School of Music), and opened an accredited K-12 private school, the Performing Arts School of Philadelphia in 1962.
Nahumck was a founding dance member of the Society for Ethnomusicology and a frequent contributor to conferences and journals.

PHILADELPHIA (April 26, 2006) - Nadia Chilkovsky Nahumck, 98, founder of the Philadelphia Dance Academy, died April 23, 2006, in Blue Bell, Pa. Born in Kiev, Russia, in 1908, she came to Philadelphia as a child.
A pioneer in modern dance, dance pedagogy and Labanotation (a system of dance movement notation employing various symbols to record the points of a dancer's body, direction of a dancer's movement, tempo and dynamics), she danced with the Irma Duncan company from 1921-1931 and was well known as a premier Duncan dancer.
Nahumck founded the Philadelphia Dance Academy in 1944, organized a college division in 1954 with the Philadelphia Musical Academy (now The University of the Arts [UArts] School of Music) and an accredited K-12 private school, the Performing Arts School of Philadelphia in 1962.

Nadia Chilkovsky Nahumck, a performer and transcriber of dances by Isadora Duncan and an influential teacher, died on Sunday in Blue Bell, Pa. She was 98.
Nahumck came to the United States as a child and grew up in Philadelphia, where she established the Children's Dance Theater in 1944.

The Philadelphia College of Performing Arts began in 1870 as the Philadelphia Musical Academy.
Seven years later, the Philadelphia Conservatory of Music was founded, and in 1944, Nadia Chilkovsky Nahumck founded the Children's Dance Theater, later known as the Philadelphia Dance Academy.
In 1962, the Philadelphia Conservatory of Music merged with the Philadelphia Musical Academy, keeping the latter's name because their charter was more flexible.

These lectures will be illustrated by motion picture films and film strips, of various ethnic styles and of outstanding contributions to the development of dance arts.

She made numerous films on dance and music ethnology, and was a faculty member at the Curtis Institute of Music, Swarthmore College, Philadelphia Musical Academy (now UArts School of Music), Combs College of Music.
Nahumck also performed with her own company and with the Philadelphia Orchestra, and commissioned music from notable composers such as James DePriest.
