Naftule Brandwein - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Naftule Brandwein, or Naftuli Brandwine, (1884-1963) was a Jewish clarinettist and one of the most influential figures in the history of klezmer music.
Brandwein was known as much for his colorful personality as for his musical talent, often playing with a neon sign, reading "Naftule Brandwein Orchestra", around his neck, and with his back facing the audience, to conceal his tricks.
Brandwein was also notoriously unreliable, unable to read music, and possessed of a reputation as a "nasty drunk".

Naftule Brandwein was not only one of the most influential musicians in the history of Klezmer music but one of this century's truly eccentric personalities.
According to "CMJ-NMR", Brandwein was "the Charlie Parker of klezmer, a master musician of the 78 rpm era who influenced everyone in his field who came after him".
One of thirteen children, Brandwein was descended from the Strettener Hasidic dynesty of Rabbi Yehuda Hersch Brandwein of Stratyn, Poland.

 Naftule Brandwein
Brandwein's recording combos were smaller than many similar groups, and this must be attributable in part, at least, to his brilliant improvisatory technique (he was unable to read from the dots), which had more fire than just about any other two Jewish musicians put together.
Brandwein's clarinet carries the melody alone, but the backing musicians are of an exceptionally high calibre, and add immeasurably to the whole.
Liner note author Henry Sapoznik observes that Brandwein has lost some of his former edge by the date of his final session in 1941 (reissued here in its four track entirety and completely new to me), but I'm not certain that I agree.

Brandwein was unique back in the '20s and '30s (he'd be unique now, too), a legendary self-promoter, drinker, gambler, but--most of all--player.
Descended from the Strettener Hasidic family of Rabbi Yehuda Hirsch Brandwein of Stratyn, Naftule Brandwein was born in the Polish Galician town of Przymyzl in 1889 and died in 1963.
By the time of his death, klezmer was on the wane, and though Brandwein was a pioneer of a peculiar Yiddish American style, and a legendary talent, he was largely forgotten.

His earliest recordings came as a member of Abe Schwartz's Orchestra, with whom he played until 1923 when he launched his solo career.
Although he played briefly with Joseph Cherniavsky's Hasidic-American Jazz Band in the early-1920s, most of the twenty three tunes that Brandwein recorded between 1922 and 1927 came as a bandleader.

Yikhes: Early Klezmer Recordings, 1911-1939 - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
These early recordings of Naftule Brandwein, Dave Tarras, Josef Solinski, Leon Ahl, Abe Schwartz, Joseph Moskowitz, and many others on this 18-track retrospective reveal the deep and ancient roots of the Lineage Stammbaum.
What is also so notable about the first volume is how the reputations of Naftule Brandwein and Dave Tarras prove, even in these early pieces, not to be the stuff of myth but even more substantial than the accounts would have us believe.
One listen to "Rumenishe Doina" by Brandwein, with it's stop and go rhythm and searing clarinet solo, is enough, but then Tarras' "A Rumenisher Nighn" is a ride through the mountains of Romania on a fast horse as his clarinet triple times the violins keeping rhythm.

Where Dave Tarras will sometimes come off as too practiced, Brandwein recordings always sound as though the idea has just come to his head and now he is illustrating by playing his heart out.
Listening to this album, one is struck by the appropriateness of another Brandwein title, "Naftule, Shpiel es noch amol" (Naftule, play it again).

Modern klezmer is unthinkable without clarinet terror Naftule Brandwein, who unleashed his prodigious but unschooled talent on New York City's professional Jewish musical community in the early 20th century.
This exceptional collection of remastered 78-rpm sides mostly issued for the first time between 1922 and 1926 demonstrates the melodic intensity of Brandwein's improvisational style plus his trademarked weightless swoops.
