Comprising the former Naga Hills District of Assam and part of the former North East Frontier Agency, Nagaland was made a separate state in 1963.
The Nagas were once head hunters, believing that the release of the spiritual soul (mio), located in the head, would bring wealth and fertility to the possessor.
The Naga territory remained split between Assam and the North East Frontier Authority after Indian independence in 1947, despite a vocal movement advocating the political union of all the Naga tribes; one faction called for secession from the Indian Union.

 NAGA INSURGENCY -A confusion of war or peace!
Whether or not Nagas are the indigenous in habitants of the present Nagaland from time immemorial may be a debatable question but as per recorded history, their resistance movement against the outsiders began when the British entered the Naga region with an expeditionary force in early 1830s.
Since Nagas were not an organised community, the British formed a Naga Club in 1918 with a view to understand the socio-administrative problems of different rival Naga clans and accordingly included some of the Christianised village heads as its members.
Naga Hills was accordingly placed under the Nagaland (Transitional Provision) Regulation 1961 with an interim body consisting of 45 members elected from different sub-tribes of the Nagas.

Nagaland was a district called Naga Hills within the State of Assam until 1957 when it was put under central administration with the nomenclature of Naga Hills Tuensang Area (NHTA).
With effect from 6 March 1969, the seats allotted to Tuensang district were raised from 6 to 12 and the strength of the Legislative Assembly increased from 46 to 52.
In the 1974 election, the people of Tuensang exercised for the first time their voting right of adult franchise to elect 20 members from Tuensang district and the strength of the Assembly was raised to its full strength of 60 members.

One of the eleven districts of the state, Kohima is the first seat of modern administration as the Headquarter of Naga Hills District (then under Assam) with the appointment of G.H. Damant as Political Officer in 1879.
The total population of the district stands at 314,366 (according to 2001 census).
The important festivals of the district are the Angami Festivl Sekrenyi (celebrated on the 25th February), the Rengma Festival Ngada (celebrated in the last week of November) and the Zeliang festivals Hega and Chega Gadi (celebrated during February and October).
