The Naga have traditionally practiced their Animistic religion and are known for being a warlike people with an agrarian economy.
The Naga are in Manipur and Nagaland are mainly Baptist Christians as a result of British missionaries and the later American intervention, which has led to a tear in their ethnic identity ever since they shed their traditional norms.
The majority of the Naga tribes in Arunachal Pradesh and Myanmar remain loyal to their animistic faith, although militant and missionary intervention in recent years is converting them to Christianity.

Although two battalions of the Naga Regiment were raised as per the historic 16-point 1960 agreement that facilitated the formation of Nagaland state, as of 2001 there were complaints that there was no proper representation of Naga youths in the regiment, headquartered at Ranikhet in Uttaranchal.
In 1957, when the Naga hills area was simmering with insurgency, a convention of the Naga people took place and it came out with a charter of demands including statehood for Nagaland and a separate entity for the Naga people in the Indian defence forces.
Subsequently, the second Naga battalion was inducted into Keran sector of Kupwara district, where it was responsible for ensuring the sanctity of approximately 24 kilometres of Line of Control (LoC) and also to counter anti-national elements and their operations.

Nagas do not have the privilege of avoiding the reality of our situation and thus we have been trying to evolve ways and mechanisms to begin a process to transform our society and repair the moral fiber that has been profoundly damaged.
I believe this journey is significant to the Naga people and our history because we have come together as a nation to walk together towards and through conflict.

Responding to the demand of the Naga Peoples Convention Naga Hills, which was a district of Assam was brought under central administration under Ministry of External Affairs with a nomenclature of Naga Hills Tuuensang Area (NHTA).
Naga Hills was accordingly placed under the Nagaland (Transitional Provision) Regulation 1961 with an interim body consisting of 45 members elected from different sub-tribes of the Nagas.

In other words, without ever resiling from its determination to restore Naga sovereignty, the NSCN leaders have for the present chosen not to make that an issue and instead taken the incremental approach to resolve what may be describes as the `Naga National Question' that by definition also includes the Naga territorial imperative.
Thus the mandate: "The unification of the Naga areas is legitimate and therefore non-negotiable." It is significant that the issue of Naga sovereignty, at present, has not merited such unqualified assertion, indeed, not even a direct mention, as that of territoriality.

Bangkok, Sept. 30: For any settlement of the Naga issue to be permanent, the approval of the Naga people would be necessary, according to Thuingaleng Muivah, the general secretary of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Isak-Muivah).
Moving away from the phase of an armed struggle, the Nagas, according to Muivah, were now entering a stage of political negotiations for a settlement with New Delhi.
He argued that the Naga problem concerned all the Nagas and, therefore, “the settlement has to be in the name of all the Nagas and that is why they (the underground leaders) are meeting us.” However, he clarified that neither he nor Vizhol had “any points of difference with them in their approach”.
